This is a temporary role, beginning training at the end of Oct 2026, running through to the end of January 2027. You must be available for an immediate start and to work over the festive season.
The Rio is the leading independent cinema in Hackney, with a complex calendar of public screenings and private hires, and while on shift as Duty Manager you are responsible for overseeing our venue and team, and delivering our public programme and hires to the highest possible standard, and managing our bar and café.
This is a key role within a small, hardworking and supportive cinema team. You are the link between the Rio and our audiences, working hard to make sure everyone feels welcome at the Rio and that the highest standards of customer service, health and safety and professionalism are maintained at all times.
Rio Duty Managers “lead from the floor” – we expect you to be a presence at the front of house, supporting your Front of House team, allocating tasks, checking on screenings and events in progress and keeping the whole venue running smoothly.
- We offer a “Staff Selects” initiative to support our team in their creative practice.
- All our Duty Managers also receive Conflict Management and WAVE training.
Responsibilities:
Customer Service
- Maintain the highest standards of customer service so that our customers have a great experience and will wish to return, and our front of house team feel supported in their duties: you should be well informed on our upcoming programme, very familiar with our membership offer, and be able to offer in-depth help with box office issues.
- Maintain clean, tidy and attractive spaces within the building, keeping an eye on displays, levels of cleanliness and stock levels throughout the day.
- Respond to customer queries or complaints, dealing with and escalating them as necessary.
Staff Management
- To ensure staff are accurately clocked in for their hours and communicate any differences to the agreed rota to the Operations Manager.
- To brief the FOH team on the events of the day, and delegate specific duties to front of house staff.
- To ensure good communication between all members of staff, including a thorough handover from day to day to support your colleagues.
- To assist the Operations Managers in staff training (including fire training and evacuation procedures, trouble shooting on box office, and training new Duty Managers)
Event Management
- You should arrive on shift well briefed on any events taking place, and be prepared to proactively lead on these on behalf of the Rio
- Provide a warm and knowledgeable welcome to event organisers and hire clients, supporting their brief to the highest standard, anticipating issues and ensuring they keep to agreed timings.
- Accurate handover with details on any issues
Admin
- To manage ticketing and membership sales for the Rio while you are on shift, trouble‑shooting for customers or FOH team as needed
- Reconciling cash and completing End of Day processes, including Box Office data, handover and security check of the venue.
Projection
- The Rio screening programme is operated largely via an automated system, but you will be trained up and need to be confident operating a manual show as needed, troubleshooting projection issues as needed and adjusting levels as needed once a screening is in progress.
Interviews will be held on Wed 21 October.
