Project: The Lower Thames Crossing is one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure programmes, linking Kent and Essex via the longest road tunnel in the country. Delivered by VSL International Ltd as part of the Bouygues Construction group, we are undertaking critical enabling works at the north portal in Tilbury, including diaphragm walls, soil mixing, and piling all essential to the successful delivery of the project.
Role Overview: We are looking to appoint multiple Site Engineers to support the delivery of complex ground engineering and deep foundation works on the Lower Thames Crossing.
- 3 x Site Engineers – Soil Mixing
- 4 x Site Engineers – Deep Foundations (piling / diaphragm wall)
Working closely with the Project and Engineering teams, you will coordinate on-site engineering activities across a range of specialist techniques, ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with design, quality, and programme requirements. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience on a large-scale, technically complex geotechnical package within a major infrastructure project.
Key Responsibilities
- Site Engineering & Delivery: Support day-to-day site engineering activities across soil mixing, piling, and diaphragm wall operations. Monitor construction progress and report to the Project Engineer. Interpret design drawings and technical documentation for on-site implementation. Contribute to planning, sequencing, and coordination of ground engineering works.
- Quality, Safety & Compliance: Ensure compliance with project safety, environmental, and quality standards. Conduct inspections and checks to verify works meet design specifications. Support implementation of RAMS and safe systems of work. Assist with incident reporting, risk assessments, and corrective actions.
- Coordination & Documentation: Work closely with subcontractors, supervisors, and technical teams to ensure smooth delivery. Maintain accurate site records, including daily reports and QA documentation. Support procurement activities, including scope preparation and subcontractor coordination.
- Engagement & Continuous Improvement: Participate in toolbox talks, inductions, and safety initiatives. Build strong working relationships across site teams and stakeholders. Contribute to continuous improvement of site processes and delivery.
Candidate Profile
- Education & Qualifications: Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience: 2–5 years’ site engineering experience within civil engineering or infrastructure. Experience in either: Soil mixing / ground improvement, or Deep foundations (piling, diaphragm walls). Exposure to major infrastructure or complex construction projects.
- Technical Skills: Understanding of construction methodologies and site engineering practices. Ability to interpret drawings and specifications. Familiarity with QA processes and site documentation. Knowledge of HSE requirements within construction environments.
- Personal Attributes: Proactive and hands-on approach. Strong communication and coordination skills. Detail-oriented with a focus on quality and safety. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, site-based environment.
