Sizewell C (SZC) is at the heart of the UK\’s clean energy revolution. This ground-breaking nuclear power plant project in Suffolk will play a vital role in delivering a sustainable future. Backed by EDF and the UK Government, Sizewell C is a once-in-a-generation project with significant opportunities to innovate, grow, and deliver excellence.
Position
We are seeking a proactive and experienced Health and Safety Manager to lead and coordinate health and safety activities for the VSL Ground Engineering Works at the Sizewell C nuclear power station development. This role is pivotal in ensuring compliance with CDM 2015 regulations, SZC standards, and fostering a culture of Zero Harm across all site operations.
Main responsibilities
Planning, Management & Coordination
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous review of the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Management Plan for ground engineering works.
- Ensure all activities comply with the Construction Phase Plan (CPP) and SZC\’s Standard Occupational Health and Safety Requirements.
- Coordinate with the Principal Contractor (PC), Principal Designer (PD), and subcontractors to ensure safe systems of work are in place and accepted prior to commencement.
Risk Management & Compliance
- Oversee the preparation and review of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), ensuring they meet SZC standards and are \”Fit for Construction.\”
- Ensure Point of Work Risk Assessments (POWRAs) are completed and verified.
- Monitor compliance with SZC\’s standards for excavation, lifting operations, working at height, plant and equipment, hazardous substances, and temporary work.
Incident Reporting & Investigation
- Lead investigations into incidents and near misses in accordance with SZC\’s Investigate Incidents Procedure.
- Use tools such as Vigilance, Insight, and the QR Code Observation System to track and trend safety performance.
- Develop and distribute Learning Briefs and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
Site Safety & Inspections
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and behavioral safety observations.
- Participate in weekly, monthly, and quarterly reviews and contribute to management reporting.
- Ensure compliance with PPE standards, site rules, and control of prohibited/restricted items.
Training & Communication
- Deliver inductions, toolbox talks, and safety briefings tailored to ground engineering risks.
- Promote SZC\’s 10 Life Saving Rules and Zero Harm principles.
- Facilitate workforce engagement through forums, stand-downs, and daily coordination meetings.
Emergency Preparedness
- Ensure emergency arrangements are in place and communicated, including First Aid, Mental Health Support, and AED deployment.
- Liaise with site security and emergency services as required.
Profil sought
Education
- NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.
- NVQ L5 or 6 in Health and Safety (recommended).
Experience
- Experience of administering, executing, and managing H&S on large scale projects.
- Adequately experienced in a H&S management role within construction or engineering scope of works.
- Experience in developing and implementing H&S management systems.
- Experience and required skills in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
Essentials
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
