Project: The Lower Thames Crossing is one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure programmes, linking Kent and Essex via the longest road tunnel in the country. Delivered within a collaborative alliance environment, the project involves complex enabling works, geotechnical operations, deep foundations, soil mixing, and large-scale civil engineering activities essential to the successful delivery of the scheme. This technically demanding infrastructure programme combines major construction logistics, temporary works, heavy plant operations, and high-risk construction activities within a live project environment.
Role Overview: We are seeking an experienced General Superintendent to lead the safe and successful delivery of major construction work packages on the Lower Thames Crossing project. Reporting directly to senior project leadership, you will play a key role in coordinating operational delivery across designated construction areas, ensuring safety, quality, programme, and commercial objectives are achieved within a complex major infrastructure environment. This role would particularly suit candidates with previous soil mixing or ground improvement experience; however, we are also keen to hear from experienced Tier 1 contractor General Superintendents with a strong background in heavy civil engineering and major infrastructure delivery.
Working closely with Project Managers, Construction Managers, Engineering teams, and specialist subcontractors, you will support the successful delivery of technically complex civil engineering works across the project lifecycle. This is an excellent opportunity to join one of the UK’s largest infrastructure programmes and contribute to the successful delivery of a nationally significant project.
Key Responsibilities
- Construction & Operational Delivery: Lead construction delivery activities from planning through to completion across designated work packages. Coordinate site operations and construction activities to ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently, to the highest quality standards, and within programme and budget requirements. Manage project priorities and allocate labour, plant, and subcontractor resources effectively to support successful project delivery. Monitor productivity, operational performance, quality, and programme adherence, implementing corrective actions where required. Support construction planning, logistics, sequencing, and temporary works coordination across live project environments. Participate in technical and construction meetings, supporting the resolution of operational and engineering challenges during delivery phases.
- Quality, Safety & Compliance: Ensure compliance with project safety, environmental, and quality standards. Conduct inspections and checks to verify works meet design specifications. Support implementation of RAMS and safe systems of work. Assist with incident reporting, risk assessments, and corrective actions.
- Health, Safety & Compliance: Ensure a safe working environment is maintained for all personnel, driving a strong safety-first culture across site teams. Ensure compliance with company objectives relating to health, safety, environmental, quality, programme, and commercial performance. Support implementation of safe systems of work, RAMS, and operational controls across construction activities. Promote proactive workforce engagement and behavioural safety initiatives across project teams. Support incident investigations, corrective actions, and continuous improvement activities where required.
- Coordination & Stakeholder Management: Build and maintain strong working relationships with client representatives, subcontractors, and alliance partners. Coordinate closely with Engineering teams, Temporary Works teams, and operational stakeholders to ensure efficient project delivery. Maintain effective communication across multidisciplinary project teams and delivery functions. Support subcontractor coordination and site interface management across multiple work fronts.
- Leadership & Team Development: Lead, mentor, and develop construction teams, ensuring effective engagement, collaboration, and utilisation of skills across the project. Drive a high-performance culture focused on operational excellence, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Support development of supervisors, engineers, and site personnel within the delivery teams. Promote collaborative working within the alliance environment to support successful project outcomes.
Candidate Profile
- Education & Qualifications: Degree, HNC, or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline.
- Experience: Proven experience delivering major infrastructure or heavy civil engineering projects within a Tier 1 contractor or specialist contractor environment. Previous experience in soil mixing, ground improvement, deep foundations, or geotechnical works would be highly advantageous. Alternatively, strong experience operating as a General Superintendent delivering complex civil engineering packages on large-scale infrastructure projects. Experience managing large site teams, specialist subcontractors, and heavy construction plant within live construction environments. Strong understanding of construction sequencing, temporary works, logistics, and site coordination.
- Technical Skills: Strong operational understanding of heavy civil engineering and major infrastructure delivery. Good knowledge of construction methodologies, temporary works, logistics, and operational planning. Ability to manage multiple work fronts and coordinate complex site operations effectively. Strong understanding of HSEQ requirements within live construction environments. Experience managing operational performance, productivity, and programme delivery.
