We are looking for a Temporary Works Design Lead to join the Civil Works Alliance (CWA) and take a pivotal role in delivering one of the UK's most significant infrastructure projects—Sizewell C. As part of the team constructing this 3.2-gigawatt power station, you will help generate low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes, playing a vital part in the nation's sustainable energy future for at least the next 60 years.
As Temporary Works Design Lead, you will be responsible for establishing and managing the internal design capability for temporary works, as well as shaping and overseeing the delivery framework across both parent company resources and external partners. Your expertise will support both pre-construction and delivery phases across Earthworks and Enabling, Marine and Tunnelling, and Main Civil Works—ensuring that the technical lifecycle is fully supported.
In this key leadership role, you will:
- Analyse and forecast temporary works (TW) design resource requirements for the project
- Establish and manage CWA's Temporary Works Design Procedure and internal TW design team
- Develop and manage the TW design delivery framework in partnership with parent companies and external suppliers
- Oversee supplier competence evaluation and manage relationships with both internal and framework partners
- Chair design coordination meetings to ensure the efficient allocation of design resource and delivery of high-quality work
- Facilitate collaboration between TW Design and Principal Designer, maintaining alignment with procedures and technical requirements
- Implement performance monitoring, quality assurance, and ongoing reporting on TW design delivery
- Drive competence and appointment assessments in line with SQEP and CDM requirements
- Develop robust processes for risk management, ensuring the golden thread of risk mitigation is maintained throughout
- Stay abreast of health and safety updates, integrating best practice into TW design delivery
- Coordinate with commercial and finance teams to manage budgets and contracts related to temporary works design
- Identify and implement opportunities for standardisation in TW design, streamlining processes and assuring consistent quality
You will bring:
- A professional qualification in civil or structural engineering (degree level or equivalent)
- At least 10 years' experience in temporary works design and implementation, including on major projects (tunnelling, deep excavations, falsework, propping)
- Deep understanding of temporary works processes (BS5975:2024-2), CDM Regulations 2015, and modern construction methods
- Proven team and project management skills, with a track record of leading both internal and external design teams
- Strong experience in commercial management, procurement, contract management (ideally with CEMAR), and supplier relationship building
- Experience in conducting competence assessments and audits of TW designers
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, including with supply chain and client stakeholders
