Senior Engineer

Bouygues Travaux Publics (TP) and Laing O’Rourke, two of Europe’s most dynamic engineering and construction specialists, are working together in a joint venture named BYLOR to deliver the main civil engineering works at Hinkley Point C (HPC) worth over £2.8 billion.

BYLOR is pushing the boundaries of innovation and modern technology while delivering high‑quality construction at massive scale. Bylor has already broken the UK record for the largest continuous concrete pour of 9,000 m³ of concrete.

We are looking for a Senior Engineer to lead technical delivery on site, reporting to the Project Engineer and managing a team of around ten engineers. The role requires experience as a Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) and/or Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC).

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage an engineering team assigned to buildings, creating a culture of “right first time” while adhering to nuclear safety standards.
  • Ensure all site operations are controlled by safe systems of work defined within approved method statements, risk assessments, task sheets and procedures.
  • Lead the engineering team in completing the Inspection and Test Plan (ITP).
  • Implement and maintain an effective design change system to support efficient procurement of materials and subcontractors.
  • Work with procurement to ensure the most appropriate materials, products, plant and systems are purchased, avoiding programme delays.
  • Evaluate alternative solutions to determine if they are more effective than current methods.
  • Utilise 3D modelling to develop methods, clarify issues and resolve method‑related problems.
  • Identify and implement alternative solutions to improve productivity, quality or safety, helping to establish best practice.
  • Prepare detailed design briefs to achieve design right‑first‑time.
  • Raise RFIs and technical queries with the responsible designer and ensure information is understood at the workface.

Temporary Works Responsibilities

  • Act as at least Deputy Temporary Works Coordinator for projects involving complex temporary works, ensuring compliance with company procedures.
  • Check design output to confirm it is clear, achievable, buildable, conforms to preferred methods and supports procurement and construction.
  • Apply design knowledge to inform decisions in a construction environment.
  • Prepare detailed design briefs for right‑first‑time design.
  • Approve temporary works designs prepared by others, amending and improving as required.

Key Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills

  • Relevant years of experience in civil engineering roles or large complex projects.
  • Experience managing people in project environments.
  • Must have experience working as a Temporary Works Supervisor or Coordinator.

Interpersonal Skills

  • A strong communicator with the ability to inspire, challenge and motivate others.
  • Ensures timely decision‑making.
  • Seeks to minimise waste in resources and materials.
  • Able to build an effective team and manage others, leading by example.
  • Presents a professional image and promotes the values of the project.

Additional Information

All positions with Bylor are employed directly with either Laing O’Rourke or Bouygues Travaux Public and include competitive salaries, private medical insurance, company pension schemes and annual holiday allowance. Some grades will also include a company car allowance.

Unless stated otherwise all positions are based at Hinkley Point C in Somerset.

Somerset boasts beautiful English countryside, an attractive coastline, interesting towns and villages along with easy access to the M5 and proximity to Bristol and Exeter.

We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at BYLOR.
