Bournemouth University is seeking an ambitious and technically skilled Energy and Decarbonisation Manager to play a leading role in delivering our climate ambitions. Working at the heart of our Sustainability and Workplace team, you will drive forward our Climate and Ecological Crisis Action Plan (CECAP), supporting the University’s target to achieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030/31. This is a unique opportunity to take ownership of energy management on a complex multi-building estate and deliver meaningful reductions in carbon, energy and water use, helping to shape a more sustainable future for our campuses, students and community. You will be joining an established and supportive sustainability and workplace team where you can apply your skills and experience and where we will support your growth and development.
About the role
You will lead the University’s approach to energy, water and carbon management, ensuring delivery of strategic objectives, compliance requirements, and cost efficiencies. Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the Carbon Management Plan across Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions
- Managing a budget for utilities and decarbonisation initiatives
- Driving investment in low and zero carbon technologies and heat decarbonisation strategies
- Overseeing the Environmental and Energy Management System (ISO14001) and compliance requirements
- Leading energy and water efficiency projects, including both technical and behaviour change initiatives
You will collaborate widely across the organisation and with external partners to embed sustainability into every aspect of university life.

Essential Experience & Knowledge
- Significant experience in energy and utilities management within a multi-building estate
- Strong technical knowledge of building services, BMS, and energy legislation
- Demonstrable experience delivering energy and water reduction projects
- Experience managing budgets, complex programmes, and change initiatives
- Knowledge of carbon reduction best practice and sustainability frameworks
- Experience developing business cases and feasibility studies
Key Skills
- Practical ability to optimise energy systems within commercial plant rooms
- Excellent analytical and data interpretation skills (including tools such as Excel and Power BI)
- Strong communication and influencing skills across diverse stakeholders
