Starting salary for this role is £34,434 per annum (pro rata for part‑time). The position sits within a defined pay band, with clear progression opportunities.

Role Purpose
To service, repair and maintain the Council’s fleet across the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole area, ensuring vehicles meet legal standards and support efficient front‑line services.

Main Responsibilities

  • Carry out thorough examinations, inspections and reports on condition, roadworthiness and safety of all vehicles or equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and routine servicing on specified or scheduled periods.
  • Use tools, equipment and facilities safely, ensuring a high standard of workmanship.
  • Comply with Health and Safety, Risk Assessments and Safe Working Practices, and statutory requirements.
  • Undertake other duties as required, commensurate with the grade of the post.
  • Participate in staff training programmes related to your role and deliver relevant training as required.
  • Provide a full repair and maintenance service for the Council’s mixed vehicle fleet.
  • Ensure compliance with the Council’s Operators Licence.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience working in a busy commercial vehicle workshop.
  • HGV licence.
  • Previous experience diagnosing, repairing and maintaining a municipal fleet, including refuse collection vehicles, road sweepers, light commercial vehicles, tractors, trailers and vans.
  • Relevant industry recognised qualification as a technician (e.g., City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 or equivalent).
  • Ability to work effectively within a team and on own initiative.
  • Capability to electronically compile reports of defects, repairs carried out and parts used, accurately.
  • Flexible and willing to undertake various tasks.
  • Strong communication skills with a diverse audience.
  • Problem‑solving ability.
  • Pro‑active attitude.
  • Organise and prioritise own work.
  • Motivated and self‑driven.
