Salary
Starting salary for this role is £48,266 (pro rata for part-time colleagues). The role sits within a well defined pay band, offering clear progression across the organisation.
Position Overview
Highways Structures Senior Engineer – responsible for the successful delivery of highway structures schemes, supporting programme and asset management objectives. Acts as Designer, Project Manager, Site Supervisor and Structures Inspector for designated projects, ensuring compliance with contractual requirements, managing risks, budgets and maintaining governance throughout the project lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Undertake work across the road bridges, foot bridges, culverts, subways, retaining walls and gantry assets as part of the planned structures maintenance programme.
- Design and support the development of highway structures schemes across all gateway lifecycle stages from concept to construction.
- Produce and review design drawings, specifications, tender and preconstruction information.
- Develop the planned programme based on asset management prioritisation.
- Ensure projects are delivered within budget, on schedule, and in compliance with technical standards and legal obligations.
- Carry out visual, general and principal inspections on site, assessing site information through desktop studies and asset management software.
- Manage contracts and performance of the team and providers to deliver services.
- Collaborate with multiple teams and stakeholders to achieve objectives.
- Drive innovation in highway structures and asset management.
Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant engineering discipline or traffic/transportation discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (ICE/IHE/CIHT/IStructE), Project Management qualification (APM), NEC Project Manager accreditation, Member of Institute of Asset Management (MIAM) or equivalent status.
- Substantial experience and knowledge of delivering highway structures and/or design and construction types.
- Advanced knowledge of theory and practice, including regulations, legislation and processes relating to structures, construction, highways, traffic or engineering.
- Substantial knowledge of contract and project management, including cost and quality control.
- Extensive knowledge of health and safety legislation and its application to structures, engineering, construction, maintenance and repairs.
- Experience supervising site‑specific contract delivery teams.
- Experience monitoring cost and financial information for projects with annual values of approximately £1m – £5m.
- Proactive, problem‑solving approach and strong communication skills.
- Ability to plan projects and programmes, including the work of others such as team members, consultants and contractors.
- Ability to persuade and influence internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Ability to manage projects over several months, planning work and dealing with competing demands.
- Must be able to travel, using public or other transport where viable, or hold a valid UK driving licence with access to own or pool car.
- Ability to work from central or project offices a minimum of 2 days per week.
- Right to work in the UK; no visa sponsorship will be provided.
