A fast-growing payments technology company is scaling its engineering leadership across several product and platform teams. The business is undergoing a significant technical evolution — including a large-scale platform rearchitecture, a major customer API migration, and the integration of AI across its core infrastructure — and is looking for Engineering Managers who can lead through that complexity.
This is a non-coding management role, but it is emphatically not a purely operational one. You will be expected to contribute meaningfully to design reviews, challenge architectural decisions, review code where required, and work closely with engineers on complex technical problems. The business is not looking for people managers who manage at arm's length — technical credibility is essential.
You will lead a team of 6–8 engineers across one of the following areas:
- Core orchestration platform
- External integrations and partner connectivity
- Account experience and horizontal platform services
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead, develop and retain a high-performing engineering team
- Contribute to and challenge architectural and system design decisions
- Drive reliability improvements, latency reduction and platform performance
- Support the migration of customers onto a new API platform
- Maintain and raise engineering standards through a period of significant change
- Identify and develop future technical leaders within the team
- Operate effectively in ambiguity during a major platform transformation
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Proven experience leading engineering teams in high-scale, high-pressure environments
- Strong technical depth across distributed systems, reliability engineering and platform architecture
- Direct experience with low-latency, high-availability services at scale
- A track record of improving system reliability and platform performance
- Experience managing teams through major technical migrations or rearchitecture programmes
- Strong judgement on architecture, scalability, and system design tradeoffs
- Demonstrated ability to grow engineers and develop future leaders
- Comfort operating with autonomy during periods of organisational and technical change
