We are looking for a Lead Engineer to take full technical ownership of a public-facing digital service that supports a government body in meeting their climate reporting duties. This isn’t just another web app. You’ll lead the build of a national platform that plays a direct role in tackling the climate crisis. You’ll shape the architecture, own the delivery, and make key decisions day-to-day - with support from the CTO when needed, but full trust to drive the work independently. You’ll work at the intersection of tech, policy, and sustainability, collaborating with designers, product leads, and government teams. The goal? A robust, accessible, secure platform that translates complex reporting requirements into a seamless user experience.
What You’ll Do
- Lead end-to-end development - from architecture to delivery
- Design complex form flows, validation logic, exports, and state management
- Own technical direction and delivery timelines with minimal oversight
- Partner with government teams on API design and system integration
- Ensure top-tier accessibility, performance, and security standards
- Turn policy requirements into elegant, user-friendly digital workflows
What You Bring
- 6+ years of engineering experience, including 2+ in a lead role
- Expert in React, Node and TypeScript, with a strong grasp of scalable architecture
- Proven track record building dynamic, form-heavy web apps
- Solid experience with cloud-based environments (AWS preferred) and CI/CD pipelines
- Strong knowledge of WCAG 2.1, usability, and digital service standards
- Self-starter mentality — you make sound technical decisions with little hand-holding
- Bonus: experience with government platforms, GDS/Digital Scotland Design System, or sustainability data
Why It Matters
- Own a mission-critical national service
- Work on something that actually moves the needle on climate change
- Collaborate with policy-makers, sustainability experts, and public sector leaders
- Set the technical tone for a platform that will be used by every major public body in Scotland
