The Role

Bottomline is looking for a Junior (Jr) Site Reliability Engineer to grow with us in a Hybrid work environment out of our Theale, Reading UK office! Candidates for this position must be authorized to work in the United Kingdom on a full-time basis for any employer without restriction. Visa sponsorship will not be provided for this position.

What You Will Do

  • As a Junior Automation/Site Reliability Engineer, you will help automate day-to-day operations, customer onboarding/setup, and BAU activities for our managed file transfer (MFT) services and other core services.
  • You will build scripts, pipelines and configuration-as-code under guidance from senior engineers, improve observability and reliability, and contribute to well-documented, repeatable processes.

How you’ll contribute:

  • Build and maintain automation for operations and customer setup using scripting and configuration-as-code (e.g., Bash, Python, Golang, Powershell).
  • Contribute to configuration management and infrastructure automation (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Terraform).
  • Develop and enhance CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab) for service deployments and runbooks.
  • Create and maintain runbooks and documentation for repeatable BAU activities and onboarding workflows.
  • Enhance monitoring and alerting (Grafana/OTEL/Prometheus) to improve reliability and reduce manual toil.
  • Collaborate with SRE/DevOps engineers and service teams to deliver small, incremental improvements.
  • Follow security and compliance practices, including certificate handling and secrets management.
  • Participate in incident response and post-incident reviews; propose automation to prevent recurrence.
  • After ramp-up, participate in an on-call rotation with guidance and support.

Customers & Operations

  • Demonstrate a strong service mindset and clear communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Meet commitments and SLAs by using automation to deliver consistent, high-quality outcomes.
  • Replace manual, error-prone onboarding steps with automated workflows and templates.

What will make you successful:

  • Foundational system administration on Linux and/or Windows Server.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure automation and configuration management (Terraform, Ansible/Puppet).
  • Scripting ability in at least one language (Bash, Python, Golang, Powershell).
  • Basic CI/CD concepts and tools in production environments.
  • Understanding of observability fundamentals (metrics, logs, traces) and relevant tools (Grafana/OTEL).
  • Basic networking and platform concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, certificates, virtualization, containers).
  • Version control with Git and GitOps-friendly workflows.
  • Clear written/verbal communication, eagerness to learn, and a collaborative mindset.
