The Shuttleworth Botanic Garden appreciates the potential of edible gardens through their content, beauty and the stories they tell. There is now a fantastic opportunity for someone to join the team and oversee the creation and development of this considerable project. The edible gardens will extend to around 5 acres including dry stone wall retained terraces, a young forest garden and areas of undeveloped, gently sloped grassland.

The aspiration is to showcase sustainable production of unusual edible plants and herbs applying permaculture principles, using innovative techniques while nurturing healthy soils. The successful candidate will demonstrate their ability and passion for achieving in terms of diversity, produce, experiences and integrity. A proven record from previous employment is essential where significant results were accomplished, challenges were overcome and communities were engaged.

This position requires someone who not only has significant experience with edible plants and systems but also with people. SBG promotes inclusion and development within their team and all employees are expected to value their colleagues. In addition, a range of public events will be developed with other SBG staff to engage with visitors sharing their knowledge and appreciation of edible gardens.

As developing gardens, the successful candidate will need to be creative and adaptable, willing to adjust and accommodate new ideas while maintaining their core understanding of the basics. They will be required to work closely with others including designers, botanists and suppliers in reaching key decisions, work in a timely manner and establish a program of development.

Considerable knowledge of edible plants is fundamental to this position to ensure a comprehensive range of plants is established and continues to develop depending on climate, requirements and suitability. The produce will be consumed on site or shared with others so experience of harvesting and processing crops is needed.

This project will also generate valuable information that the Edible Gardens Lead will ensure is documented and shared with the network that they will develop as well as any other interested party. The successful candidate should be qualified in horticulture or other relevant subjects to HND level or higher and have at least 5 years’ experience growing edible plants. A full driving licence is needed as the role involves working at different sites on the Island. A relocation package, the option to join the company pension scheme and other benefits are offered.
