POSITION SUMMARY:
Children’s HealthWatch is a multi-site network of pediatricians and public health researchers with the mission of achieving health equity for young children and their families by advancing research to transform policy. Headquartered at Boston Medical Center, we collect data on the frontlines of health care to understand how policy decisions impact the health and well-being of young children and families. We then analyze and share our findings with academics and policymakers to inform policy at the state and federal level.
The Communications Manager, Children’s HealthWatch, supports strategic internal and external communications priorities across Children’s HealthWatch. Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with the senior-level staff at Children’s HealthWatch, the Communications Manager is an integral member of the Communications team and provides strategic communications support across the organization along with critical external communications support. This includes supporting relationships with foundations and contributing to grant applications, working closely with the Children’s HealthWatch Advisory Board on their work to support policy, communications, and strategy of the organization, and drafting, and editing press releases and policy publications, and supporting research translation in collaboration with Children’s HealthWatch Principal Investigators and staff and BMC Communications and Government Affairs teams.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Primary liaison for Children’s HealthWatch team to advise on media inquiries.

In partnership with the Executive Director and senior-level staff, develop programming for annual Equity Town Hall Series and monthly Advisory Board meetings and stewardship.

Develops and executes tailored communications campaigns for priority audiences.

Researches, writes, edits, and produces communications, including executive communications, external newsletters, and other initiative-related content, supported by the Policy and Communications Coordinator

Manages proactive and reactive media and supports media interviews and press events, in coordination with BMC Communications

Promotes synergies across the Children’s HealthWatch network through key partnerships with Children’s HealthWatch site-specific Principal Investigators and staff, along with the Children’s HealthWatch leadership and Center Team.

Coordinates with multiple staff members in creating content for Children’s HealthWatch social media outlets, website, and interactive data dashboard

Identifies new ideas and strategies for communication and engagement, and executes on those ideas in collaboration with Children’s HealthWatch leadership and Center Team

Develops content, events, and initiatives to support the mission and work of Children’s HealthWatch.

Develops compelling ideas, approaches, and content for articles and other written materials that convey Children’s HealthWatch’s key strengths, priorities, accomplishments, and positions to a wide range of audiences. This includes the Children’s HealthWatch website, specific projects, and policy reports/briefs, and research translation of peer-reviewed publications.

Collaborates with Center team and PIs on communications strategy and tactics, providing valuable counsel and advice.

Supports relationship cultivation with foundations and private donors, while maintaining clear communications with BMC Development and Strategic Research Growth Departments

Reviews and contributes to grant proposals and reports for review and approval by Children’s HealthWatch Leadership and BMC Office of Development

JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
-
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in communications, English, or journalism.
EXPERIENCE:
-
4-6 years progressive experience in communications is required.

Experience developing and executing complex communications plans.

Experience in health care, public health, and/or public policy strongly preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSA):

Commitment to the advancement of racial and health equity among families with children.

Strategic communications planner and a significant hands-on contributor, with superior writing and communications skills.

Proven track record of developing and implementing communications strategies, especially in a research, health care, and/or public health environment

Demonstrates writing and editing expertise, a strategic approach, strong relationship-building skills, and the ability to liaise across departments and organizations.

Ability to take direction and work collaboratively across various teams throughout a large, fast-paced and complex organizational environment.

Experience managing complex projects, from creative development to completion.

Demonstrated ability to analyze complex issues and information and present it in a clear and compelling manner.

Excellent writer and editor with keen attention to detail. Strong verbal communicator.

Ability to create dynamic and engaging presentations using PowerPoint and other digital tools.
