The OTR/L performs patient assessments and creates individualized care plans. They also participate in interdisciplinary treatment team and discharge planning. The OTR/L oversees the development and administration of
therapeutic group programming, including recreational therapeutic activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess patients’ cognitive abilities, coping skills, mobility (adaptive equipment) and sensory modulation needs.
- Evaluate ADL performance and ability to participate in group programming via observation, interviews, group assessments, and the use of standardized assessment tools.
- Develop and maintain Sensory Programming and interventions for patient de-escalation/soothing.
- Serve as a resource clinician to unit staff; provide training in sensory \”diet\” interventions/techniques.
- Develop and maintain the Geriatric Psychiatry Group Therapeutic Group Activities Program.
- Define goals and objective measures for group documentation.
- Supervise COTA/CTRS staff.
- Research and support evidenced-based practice initiatives and revise programming accordingly.
- Serve on Nurse Practice Council Fall and Restraint Prevention Teams.
- Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

- Communicate effectively with internal and external customers with respect of differences in cultures, values, beliefs and ages, utilizing interpreters when needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Ability to perform comprehensive patient assessments within the OTR/L scope of practice.
- Ability to complete all required documentation in an accurate and timely fashion, according to accepted practice and standard of care.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education in field of expertise.
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in an interdisciplinary setting.
Education/Experience/Licensure/Technical/Other:
- Education: B.S. prior to 2007; M.S. post 2007.
- Experience (Type & Length): Two years experience in an occupational therapy setting required; 1 year in a psychiatric setting preferred.
- Certification/Licensure: MA License required; National Registration required.
- Software/Hardware: Meditech 6.0 experience a plus; Microsoft Outlook; Word; Excel.
- Other: American Heart Association CPR certification.
