As a Mechanical Designer at BOS Innovations, you will develop automation concepts and deliver complete design packages for custom automation systems. You will be responsible for creating cost-effective, high-quality designs that meet customer specifications and project timelines. This role requires strong proficiency in SolidWorks, a strong understanding of manufacturing processes, and the ability to translate technical requirements into practical, build-ready solutions. You will work closely with project, manufacturing, and customer teams to ensure designs are accurate, efficient, and support successful machine builds.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop mechanical concepts and create mechanical designs in SolidWorks for automation systems.
  • Research and identify mechanical components for projects ensuring they meet application and customer requirements.
  • Provide guidance and direction to junior design members.
  • Communicate with suppliers to discuss component specifications, pricing, and lead time.
  • Interact with Project Management team and customer technical contacts to obtain clarification on customer specifications.
  • Present concepts/designs at concept reviews, internal design reviews, and at customer design reviews.
  • Create and assemble detailed drawing packages for the build team, with all necessary tolerance/dimensions, bills of materials, and assembly drawings.
  • Document information for Customer Manuals: As built Drawing package, BOMs, spare parts lists, maintenance items, and OEM documentation.
  • Identify, troubleshoot and develop solutions to mechanical build issues.
  • Support the Applications group by developing concepts, calculating cycle time, estimating design labour, and estimating mechanical purchases.
  • Develop RFQs for major mechanical system purchases and communicate with the supplier(s) involved.
  • Work with the manufacturing team to review drawing accuracy and identify ways to optimize the design.
  • Continuous development, participation and implementation of BOS Standards for Mechanical Design.
  • Weekly meeting with Mechanical Design group to discuss group initiatives, priorities, workload, address any current issues or inefficiencies within the design group and generate solutions.
  • Regular communication with Mechanical Design Group Lead to identify priorities and review status of projects.
  • Attend White Board meetings to present status of design and hear status of other disciplines, as well as get updates on urgent issues.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design within automation, custom machinery, or manufacturing environments.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks (complex assemblies, detailed drawings, and design for manufacturing).
  • Demonstrated experience developing automation concepts and translating customer requirements into practical, build-ready designs.
  • Strong understanding of machining, fabrication, and assembly processes with a focus on design for manufacturability.
  • Ability to identify technical risks and implement effective design solutions to support project timelines and budgets.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams including Applications, Controls, Manufacturing, and Project Management.
  • Proven ability to mentor and support junior designers, providing technical guidance and contributing to team development and design standards.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present concepts and designs to internal teams and customers.
