Are you an experienced Clerk of Works professional with strong technical knowledge of construction methods, building regulations and health & safety? Can you lead and support a team to drive excellent on-site quality assurance across a busy housing portfolio? If you have a sharp eye for detail, the confidence to challenge poor workmanship and the ability to produce clear inspection reports, we would like to hear from you.
As Managing Clerk of Works within Stock Investment & Asset Management (Housing: Quality & Investment), you will lead the Clerk of Works function and oversee day-to-day site inspection activity across refurbishment, maintenance, and capital works. You will provide technical oversight, ensure work meets drawings/specifications and relevant standards, monitor CDM 2015 and wider health & safety compliance, and act as the Council’s “quality eyes on site”. You will also maintain robust site records, manage defects/snagging through to handover, and work closely with contract/project managers and contractors to resolve issues and improve performance.
What’s in it for you? Excellent training and development opportunities, plus a range of benefits including:
- Generous holiday allowance
- Local Government Pension scheme
- Flexible working and family friendly policies
- Season ticket and bicycle loans
- A range of staff discounts including local subsidised gym memberships
- Supportive staff networks
We are looking for someone with significant on-site supervision/inspection experience (ideally in social housing/public sector), who can confidently lead a small team and work collaboratively with contractors and project teams. You will bring strong knowledge of construction quality, building regulations and health & safety, plus the ability to write clear inspection reports and maintain accurate records (including photographic evidence). Experience working under NEC4 and a relevant construction qualification/membership (e.g., ICWCI, CIOB, RICS, HNC/NVQ or equivalent) are desirable.
The job is primarily based in Laurence House, 1 Catford Road, London, SE6 4RU, but we operate a hybrid approach where you will be required to work both in the office and from home on a regular basis.
Regular travel to multiple sites across the borough (and occasional attendance at early/late site meetings) is required. You must be able to undertake site inspections, including access to building plant areas and construction environments, in line with health & safety requirements. The post may be subject to an appropriate DBS check.
The recruitment process is anonymous and we don’t accept CV’s. It is essential that you complete the application fully and that your supporting statement covers how you meet each of the person specification criteria listed.
