Discover yourself in Lewisham where what you do makes a difference to our vibrant and culturally diverse communities! We have a rich history of welcoming people from all over the world and are proud to be recognised as the UK’s first Borough of Sanctuary, for our work in championing the rights of refugees and migrants.

Are you someone who thrives in a fast‑paced operational environment and takes pride in delivering high‑quality public services? Do you enjoy leading people, solving problems, and ensuring frontline operations run smoothly? We’re looking for a proactive and motivated individual to join our team and make a real impact on how waste services are delivered across the borough.

The proposed role is critical for managing two operational sites to ensure efficiency, compliance, and cost control. Responsibilities include:

  • Stock management
  • Daily bin movements for scheduled jobs
  • Coordination of bin collection, disposal, refurbishment, and cleaning
  • Overseeing health and safety compliance at the Brockley Grove site
  • Bin repairs, degassing of canisters, and organising deliveries to residents and from suppliers

Maintaining both sites in an organised and tidy condition is essential to prevent unnecessary purchases of new bins and parts, directly reducing operational expenditure. This position delivers substantial financial benefits: degassing alone saves a minimum of £60,000 annually, with further savings achieved through reduced disposal costs and optimised stock management. Additionally, maintaining site capacity following extensive clearance ensures efficient storage and avoids costly emergency procurement. By implementing these measures, the role supports sustainability, operational resilience, and cost efficiency, making it a strategic investment for the council. This role is temporary for 2 years.

What’s in it for you? Excellent training and development opportunities, plus a range of benefits including:

  • Generous holiday allowance
  • Local Government Pension scheme
  • Flexible working and family friendly policies
  • Season ticket and bicycle loans
  • A range of staff discounts including local subsidised gym memberships
  • Supportive staff networks

We’re looking for a proactive, well‑organised individual with experience supervising operational or logistics sites. You should have strong staff‑management skills, good knowledge of health and safety, and the ability to coordinate daily bin movements, repairs, and stock control. Attention to detail, clear communication, and a commitment to keeping sites safe, tidy, and efficient are essential.

The job is based between Wearside Service Centre and Brockley Grove Depot.

Special conditions:

  • Driving licence is required
  • This role is temporary for 2 years

The recruitment process is anonymous and we don’t accept CV’s.

Salary: £32,442- £33,384 per annum (Scale 4). N.B: All appointments will be offered at the minimum spinal column point (SCP) for the grade of the role. The only exception to this will be when matching current salary (up to the maximum of the scale), which is subject to evidential proof.
