We are seeking a senior associate director to support a range of high‑profile projects across our Power & Energy portfolio. This includes high voltage AIS and GIS substations, transmission system assets, HVDC interconnectors, and energy storage systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the energy sector.
- Extensive experience in a cable‑related role supporting FEED design and/or detailed design.
- Able to manage and lead HV/EHV cable designs at all project stages.
- Experienced user of CYMCAP & COMSOL to support cable system design.
- Experience of working at EHV transmission voltages.
- Experience in the design of HV and EHV cable systems, for both HVAC and HVDC systems.
- Developing HV/EHV cabling system specifications, concept/detailed design and design review, estimation, site supervision and support as required.
- Provide technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design.
- Prepare plant and equipment technical specifications, power cable route specifications, tender specifications, technical and progress reports.
- Ensuring correct and accurate interface with other engineering functions involved in the projects, attend, and conduct internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors.
- Support factory inspections Test (FAT).
- Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating calculations, TMF and EMF calculations, and sheath induced voltage calculations.
- Perform design reviews and verification of design.
- Ensuring all project designs are compliant with CDM regulations, relevant legislation and company procedures.
- Establish and promote best practice in health, safety, and environmental matters in conjunction with the SHQE department.
- Assist with temporary works design schemes.
- Maintain good working relations with client / designer / team, together with our supply chain.
- Advise engineers on setting out methods and techniques.
- Ensure that the drawings and specification documents contain sufficient, accurate information for construction of the works.
- Formally request any missing information in sufficient time to allow the programme to proceed without delay.
- Prepare written risk assessments and method statements for the control of the works.
- Ensure that inspection and test plans are completed as required by the PMP /Specification, including a check of dimension accuracy and quality.
Here’s what you’ll need
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- Chartered Engineer (IET) or working towards chartership.
- Working as CDAE and TP141 authorisation preferred.
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in HV Cable System design (132 kV–400 kV), ideally within UK transmission and distribution environments.
- Familiarity with National Grid and DNO standards and processes.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver under pressure.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical workstreams and contribute to strategic project delivery.
