Role: Senior DevOps Engineer
Contract: Permanent
Location: Nottingham or Islington, Hybrid + on-call rota
Recruitment Partner: Kershia Broughton
What you'll be doing:
Our Technology team are looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to take technical ownership across the Boots Online Doctor cloud platform, helping keep a complex, regulated healthcare service secure, reliable and ready to scale.
Based from Islington with hybrid working, you’ll work across a broad AWS estate and play a key role in improving infrastructure, CI/CD, observability, security and cost efficiency. This is a senior individual contributor role, so you’ll lead through technical expertise, clear decision-making and mentorship rather than formal line management.
It’s a great opportunity to shape platform direction, solve meaningful infrastructure challenges and make a visible impact on services that support patients and customers. We place so much value on our Technology team — if you want to build a career that will keep developing with your skills, there’s no better place to do it.
Key responsibilities:
- Take technical ownership of complex AWS infrastructure across the Boots Online Doctor platform, including Elastic Beanstalk, ECS Fargate, Lambda, EC2, RDS Aurora MySQL, DynamoDB, Redshift and CloudFront.
- Lead the design and improvement of scalable, resilient and secure cloud architectures aligned to the AWS Well-Architected Framework.
- Own and improve Infrastructure as Code standards and governance across Terraform and CloudFormation, including consistency, module design, state management and drift detection.
- Architect, maintain and continually improve CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and GitHub Actions, helping engineering teams release reliably and efficiently.
- Build automation and tooling that reduces manual operational work, improves deployment quality and removes recurring toil.
- Lead cloud security and compliance improvements across IAM, VPC configuration, security groups, routing and AWS Shield Advanced.
- Drive remediation from AWS Well-Architected reviews and security improvement programmes, with a strong focus on protecting patient and customer data.
- Design and improve monitoring, alerting, incident response and runbooks using Amazon CloudWatch and complementary tooling.
- Lead investigation and resolution of complex production incidents, including root cause analysis and preventative actions to reduce MTTD and MTTR.
- Provide technical mentorship, code reviews and day-to-day guidance to DevOps Engineers, supporting onboarding and capability growth across the team.
What you'll need to have (our must-haves):
- Significant hands-on experience in a senior DevOps, cloud engineering or platform engineering role within a production AWS environment.
- Deep AWS cloud architecture experience, with confidence designing highly available, fault-tolerant and scalable platforms.
- Strong hands-on experience with core AWS services such as EC2, S3, Elastic Beanstalk, ECS Fargate, Lambda, RDS Aurora MySQL, DynamoDB, CloudFront, Redshift and VPC.
- Expert-level CI/CD experience using Jenkins and GitHub Actions at enterprise scale.
- Strong Infrastructure as Code experience with Terraform and CloudFormation across multiple environments.
- Advanced scripting and automation skills using Python, Bash or similar languages.
- Strong understanding of AWS networking and security, including IAM, least privilege, VPC design, subnet architecture, routing and security groups.
- Experience designing or improving monitoring and observability using CloudWatch and related tooling.
- Practical experience leading incident response, root cause analysis and service reliability improvements in a high-availability environment.
- Strong communication skills, with the confidence to explain technical recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Willingness to support with the teams on-call rota, in which you will remain contactable, respond to incidents within agreed service timescales and receive an on-call allowance for each period on duty.
It would be great if you also have:
- Experience working in a regulated environment, ideally healthcare, pharmaceuticals or another setting where data protection, governance and auditability really matter.
- AWS certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional or AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate or Professional.
- Practical experience applying the AWS Well-Architected Framework in production environments.
- Experience with AWS Shield Advanced and wider AWS security services.
- Familiarity with Redshift, DMS, Looker, Stripe, Braze or Salesforce Marketing Cloud integrations.
- Experience improving cloud cost efficiency without compromising resilience, security or service quality.
Where your brilliance can take you:
This role can be a strong next step towards broader cloud architecture, platform engineering leadership or senior technical leadership within Cloud Engineering. You’ll have the scope to influence how Boots Online Doctor evolves, deepen your expertise in security, observability, automation and cloud governance, and help other engineers grow through mentoring and technical guidance.
You’ll be trusted to bring solutions, use your voice and shape progress — with support from the Lead DevOps Engineer, Head of Cloud Engineering and the wider Technology team. Based in Islington, you’ll work in a hybrid pattern with access to a major London technology market, while contributing to a trusted Boots platform with real patient and customer impact.
