Are you a skilled Technical Architect looking to make a real impact in the healthcare sector? At Boots, we are on a mission to build a brilliant future for our people and customers. Join our Technology team in Nottingham, Beeston, and help us deliver innovative IT solutions that enhance the lives of our communities.

What You’ll Be Doing

We are looking for a broadly skilled, hands‑on Technical Architect to design, deliver, and enhance IT solutions across multiple capabilities within our Healthcare business, including Pharmacy and Opticians. This pivotal role requires an adaptable individual who balances day‑to‑day project delivery with the long‑term health, resilience, and financial efficiency of our application estate.

In addition to driving our healthcare and opticians’ transformation programme, you will take a proactive leadership role in managing Technical Debt, driving Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) optimisation, and ensuring robust Business Continuity.

Crucially, you will partner closely with the Delivery Manager to turn remediation roadmaps and new technology introductions into reality. Furthermore, you will serve as the Healthcare Supply Automation Lead, bridging the gap between core IT, logistics, and operations to oversee mission‑critical, highly automated dispensing ecosystems, while acting as a vital architectural anchor during high‑impact service incidents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and peer‑review high‑level and detailed technical designs in collaboration with Solution and Enterprise Architects.
  • Partner with the Delivery Manager to support the smooth introduction of new technologies across the platform.
  • Work as part of a structured delivery framework alongside project managers, business analysts, and delivery leads to ensure high‑quality architectural outputs.
  • Support the Lead Architect in maintaining high‑quality design documentation and architectural diagrams using structured modelling frameworks.
  • Identify and catalogue technical debt across the healthcare application estate.
  • Act as the key technical bridge during business‑critical incidents, ensuring swift resolution.
  • Ensure that immediate technical root causes are understood and that mid‑to‑long‑term remediation and stabilisation plans are managed, tracked, and executed correctly.
  • Drive TCO optimisation initiatives for healthcare systems.
  • Identify, plan, and execute proactive optimisation initiatives to tune the application and infrastructure footprint, driving formal TCO reduction programs.
  • Act as the dedicated Pharmacy Healthcare Supply Automation Lead, ensuring IT seamlessly supports business logistics teams.
  • Provide end‑to‑end architectural design and technical oversight for business‑owned automation systems, specifically KNAPP for Dispensing Support Platforms (DSP) and Centered Solutions for Regional Dispensing Hubs (RDH).
  • Act as the architecture champion for service availability, ensuring appropriate business continuity and disaster recovery designs are implemented for critical healthcare systems.

What You’ll Need To Have (our Must-haves)

  • Broad exposure to enterprise IT, with deep technical experience in the Microsoft Azure technology stack, web technologies, and microservices.
  • Proven experience collaborating with Delivery Managers to balance technical ideals with delivery timelines.
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly in high‑severity incident environments.
  • Experience working with mixed onshore, offshore, and third‑party partners.
  • A solid understanding of information security and compliance, including GDPR and the strict protection of sensitive PII/PHI data.

It Would Be Great If You Also Have

  • Experience with integration technologies such as the Azure integration stack or Talend.
  • Familiarity with ArchiMate 3 for business and architectural modelling.
  • An industry‑standard architecture certification such as TOGAF or ISEB.
  • Prior exposure to warehouse management systems or pharmaceutical automation solutions.

Rewards Designed For You

  • Boots Retirement Savings Plan (up to 6% company contribution)
  • Generous employee discounts for you and a family member
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption leave pay
  • Access to free, 24/7 counselling and support through TELUS Health, our Employee Assistance Programme.

At Boots, we’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer, creating a place where everyone feels welcome, supported, and free to be themselves. We believe that when our people feel valued and included, they thrive, so we’re committed to creating a brilliant Boots for our people so they can make a difference for our customers and colleagues every time.
