Job Goal
To create a class environment favourable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate students to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes that society feels will contribute to their development into mature, able and responsible men and women in accordance with each student’s ability and to establish good relationships with parents and colleagues.
Performance Responsibilities
- Meet and instruct assigned classes in the designated location and times using the curriculum guides approved by the Board
- Maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
- Develop daily lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to each pupil’s needs
- Translate lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilise time for instruction
- Evaluate pupils’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports
- Communicate with parents through report cards, notes, conferences and other means to discuss pupil progress and interpret the school program
- Assess learning needs of students regularly and seek assistance from district specialists as required
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behaviour needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere and appropriate behaviour in other school-related activities as set forth by the Student Code of Conduct
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
- Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centres
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records and safeguard confidentiality as required by law, district policy and administrative procedures
- Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities and other self-selected professional growth activities
- Work with faculty colleagues to develop and implement instructional programs that meet individual needs, interests and abilities of students, including IEPs of special students
- Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines
- Select, requisition, and maintain required inventory records of books and instructional materials
- Supervise pupils in and out of classroom activities during the assigned working day
- Strive to maintain and improve professional competence by participating in planning and implementing in-service education activities, taking college courses, developing special projects, etc.
- Attend staff meetings and, as possible, serve on staff committees and participate in the sponsorship of pupil activities
- Maintain a professional awareness of current literature related to the assignment, including working knowledge of state and federal law, board policy and administrative regulations
- Maintain all grades in an approved record book and turn in the completed record book at the end of the school year
- Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s)
- Perform other duties consistent with the position assigned as may be requested by the supervisor
