The Role

We are searching for a talented and ambitious Principal Medical Writer to join our team. We’re looking for someone who gets excited by the science, enjoys collaborating to create great content, and gets a buzz out of having an active and vocal role with clients and becoming a trusted extension of their team. You will likely be working across a range of therapy areas and accounts, ultimately acting as the lead writer for allocated accounts. You will take the lead on the conversations with the client, particularly the medic, relating to scientific content, and own client relationships where appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the scientific and promotional writing on allocated accounts with minimal support from the Head of Scientific Communications.
  • Be seen by clients as a lead writer / gatekeeper – an extension of the brand team with strong scientific and strategic understanding and drive.
  • Help shape strategy with the strategy team, and ensure this is carried through and implemented in all that we do as well as identifying tactics to help grow the accounts.
  • Research and write compelling content to support our clients' marketing objectives.
  • Ensure all content is accurate, on strategy, tailored to the audience, delivered on time, meets the brief, and is supported by credible references.
  • Clear presentation of complex tactics or proposals to clients.
  • Work with the strategy team to shape meetings and workshops and be seen as one of the main contributors.
  • Incorporate internal team and client feedback.
  • Attend internal and client meetings, taking the lead on discussions on scientific content, or supporting more junior team members as relevant.
  • Review work from junior members of the team and provide constructive feedback helping them grow.
  • Provide support to other members of the writing team, including line management.
  • Support head of department as a critical senior individual helping to drive effectiveness of the team.

Experience and skills

  • 7+ years medical writing experience within healthcare communication agencies, delivering multi-channel solutions, with a focus on promotional writing – at least one year as a Principal Medical Writer.
  • Ability to lead in discussions with, briefing from, and pitching to clients.
  • Experience reviewing work from, and mentoring and managing, junior members of the team.
  • A creative and analytical mind, with a proven strong scientific and strategic understanding and drive.
  • Sound understanding of scientific/pharmacological principles.
  • Ability to seek out, critique and interpret clinical/scientific data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Good time management and ability to work to deadlines.
  • Professional – having the ability to communicate with clients, KOLs and colleagues alike.

Daily organisation

Our working week is 37.5 hours with core hours of 8.45–5.30 with an hour break for lunch, but we try to have flexibility where needed as long as it doesn’t negatively impact other team members. We tend to start our days with an 8.45am Teams call, which is a mix of catch up and alignment for the day. We think it’s important to get a connection to the team and so we broadly take the time to relax into the day with focus. We don’t do timesheets!
