Faber is a leading independent literary publisher, committed to the work of the most dynamic and significant voices. The current list spans Nobel laureates, bestselling fiction, award-winning non-fiction, poetry, film, classical music and a leading drama list.

We are looking for a highly motivated Editor-at-Large to manage the Classical Music list as part of our Editorial team. Faber’s Classical Music list is an important and prestigious part of our broader non-fiction publishing and features exceptional books by extraordinary talents, including Errollyn Wallen, Edward Dusinberre, Stephen Hough, Ian Bostridge, Fiona Maddocks, Steven Isserlis, Sir Antonio Pappano, Jeremy Eichler and Alice Farnham, among many others.

Editorial experience within a publishing house would be ideal but not essential for the role; a deep knowledge of and passion for classical music as well as strong connections within the classical music world, however, are vital.

Key responsibilities would include:

  • Championing the Classical Music list both externally and internally.
  • Scouting for and commissioning new classical music authors, as well as working with existing Faber authors - acquiring approximately 3 to 4 titles per year.
  • Reading and feeding back as required on classical music submissions from agents.
  • As required, assessing the first draft of incoming manuscripts.
  • Keeping in touch with authors and dealing with their queries, as appropriate.
  • Attending Editorial and Acquisitions meetings when required, and any other relevant internal or external meetings.
  • Writing cover copy, AIs and other documents required for positioning of books on the list.
  • Advising on backlist queries (including monitoring of stock levels and potential reissues), as well as paperback timings.
  • Attending launch parties for classical music and launches/events in general, as well as Faber Members events relating to the classical music list, as required.

This is a part-time position - two days a week, which are flexible but ideally Tuesday and Wednesday, in our London office whenever possible.

To apply, please send a CV and a cover letter, explaining why you would be suitable for the position, to EditorAtLarge@faber.co.uk, quoting reference BB. The closing date is Tuesday 17 December 2024.

Faber has a staff of just over 140, based across our offices in Hatton Garden (London) and Harlow. We want all our staff to have the best possible, most positive and enjoyable experience while working at Faber.

Our benefits include:

  • Access to Faber titles (including regular staff book clubs), discounted Independent Alliance titles, discounted Faber Academy courses
  • Minimum of 28 days’ holiday per year
  • Five days per year for volunteering work of your choice
  • Full subscription to the Headspace meditation app
  • Season-ticket loans
  • Cycle-to-work vouchers
  • Subsidised eye tests
  • Generous pension scheme
  • Life assurance and income protection insurance
  • Access to online GP and advisory services
  • Cash plan for healthcare costs

We welcome applications from any individual regardless of ethnic origin, gender, disability, religious belief, sexual orientation or age. All applications will be considered on merit.
