An exciting opportunity for a Designer to join the team at Scotland\’s premier independent publisher
Birlinn is a leading Edinburgh-based independent publishing house, publishing for Scotland and for the world. Our output includes significant award-winners such as Alexander McCall Smith, Alistair Moffat, Alycia Pirmohamed, Val McDermid, Alan Taylor, Denise Mina, Hannah Lavery, Jen Stout, and Jenni Fagan – bright emerging voices writing in the areas of history, nature writing, biography, academic studies, music, art, fiction, poetry, children\’s and sports.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Designer to join the team at Birlinn Limited, Scotland\’s premier independent publisher. This hybrid part-time role (3 days per week) will involve working closely with our Senior Designer as well as with representatives from other departments. The position is ideal for a candidate with enthusiasm, flexibility and creative flair who will enjoy being part of a small, dedicated team.
The role
• Create cover artwork for print (including spine and back cover artwork, typography and copyfitting, barcode and files for finishes)
• Amend existing cover artwork for reprints and different formats
• Produce promotional graphics for print and online platforms
• Picture research
Knowledge, skills and experience
• Confident with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
• Illustration skills
• Ability to prioritise, multi-task, and stay organised in a busy work environment
• High standard of typographic design
• A demonstrable interest in publishing design
Desirable but not essential
• Some experience within a publishing environment
• Animation/video editing skills
