Overview
Senior RF Engineer responsible for supporting the design, deployment and optimisation of wireless mobile solutions across the HS2 project.
Lead the cellular RF design of trackside macro cell sites serving millions of passengers each year within a multi-discipline design team.
- What You’ll Be Doing
- Carry out RF design for trackside macro cellular site infrastructure including antennas, RF feeders, RET control and remote radio installations.
- Perform RF modelling, link budgets and design using Atoll and other planning tools, including creation of coverage/quality simulations and throughput estimations.
- Modify clutter/DTM data to model the future final configuration of HS2 to ensure simulation accuracy.
- Perform iterative system optimisation to maximise RF quality and optimise handovers in a high-speed rail environment.
- Review results, drawings and reports conducted by others.
- Collaborate with UK MNOs to coordinate site design and parameters.
- Lead optimisation activities to manage interference from external macro sites and minimise capture of unwanted external users.
- Aid in the development of bespoke antenna solutions by defining performance parameters required to meet system requirements.
- Develop design criteria/requirements, system dimensioning, link budget and traffic analysis.
- Create low level designs including Bills of Materials, cable schedules and detailed system configuration diagrams, ensuring costs are closely controlled throughout the design process.
- Ensure designs are dimensioned for current demand and scalable for future growth and changes in MNO requirements.
- Participate in equipment co-ordination sessions with HS2 stakeholders and partners to represent RF design needs and minimise design change.
- Complete RAMS and abide by company H&S policy.
- Work with project managers and co-ordinators to deliver projects on time and on budget.
- Liaise with customers, presenting designs to clients, stakeholders and project teams.
- Complete Handover Packs, Post Integration Reports and Design Reports on agreed timescales and report templates.

- Familiarise with all company documentation, especially ISO procedures.
- Role requires 2 days per week located in Birmingham.
- What You’ll Bring
- Experience in RF planning, designing mast installations and optimising outdoor coverage solutions, ideally with a background at an MNO.
- Prior experience of providing coverage solutions to rail networks is advantageous.
- Knowledge of UK or IE mobile network architecture models and standards.
- Experience in designing DAS equipment rooms, including MNO equipment requirements, dimensioning DAS head end, and defining electrical and cooling loads.
- Experience of testing methodologies and test tools (e. g., scanners and test phones such as TEMS, NEMO).
- Advanced knowledge in RF and performance optimisation.
- Advanced knowledge of 3GPP standards, especially relating to high-speed rail scenarios and its impact on RAN performance.
- Advanced knowledge of radio propagation models, fade margins and other environmental factors impacting RF coverage.
- Good knowledge of Radio Link Budgets.
- Why work with us
- Flexible working opportunities.
- Parental leave with up to 20 weeks paid at full salary.
- Holiday allowance starting at 25 days, rising with length of service.
