The Design Engineer – Electrical is responsible for the design, specification and technical assurance of electrical power, mechanical cooling, and associated infrastructure systems to support Boldyn’s Telco, Enterprise, Offshore, Venues, Special Events, Wi-Fi, and NHIB programmes. The Design Engineer – Electrical will work across M&E projects and is therefore expected to demonstrate both electrical and mechanical competence. Reporting to the Solution Design Manager, this role provides embedded, in-house specialist engineering capability, replacing our reliance on external electrical and mechanical consultants. The role encompasses a Technical Design Authority (TDA) status and compliance with UK regulations / standards, buildability and operational resilience of all electrical and mechanical infrastructure that supports our systems. The role covers the design of Main Equipment Room’s (MER), remote unit locations, rooftop / mast and street infrastructure and ensuring systems are safe, resilient, compliant with UK legislation and aligned to mobile network operator (MNO) equipment requirements. Working alongside Senior Design Engineers, Design Engineers, and Delivery Managers, the Design Engineer – Electrical supports a right-first-time design ethos, reduces delivery and compliance risk to power and cooling designs across Boldyn’s portfolio.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Electrical Power System Design & Regulatory Compliance
- Act as TDA for electrical and mechanical engineering, buildability, and compliance.
- Design and dimension low-voltage electrical power systems for telecoms infrastructure in accordance with UK Building Regulations, BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), and BS EN 50174 (ICT & Telecoms Cabling).
- Develop large scale power solutions for Multi-Operator and high-volume low power solutions for Remote Unit locations and Smart City infrastructure on street furniture assets.
- Ensure compatibility with MNO power requirements, including PSUs, BBUs and RRUs from Nokia, Ericsson, and legacy Huawei platforms.
- Coordinate designs with host building electrical infrastructure, landlords, Distribution Network Operators, and site M&E representatives.
- Ensure designs consider Building Regulations, Fire Authority requirements and Telecoms Security Act where required.
- Mechanical Cooling & Ventilation System Design
- Design and size cooling and ventilation systems for telecoms environments in accordance with UK Building Regulations Part F (Ventilation), Part L (Energy Efficiency), BS EN 378 (Refrigeration Systems and Heat Pumps), and BS EN 16798 (Ventilation and Indoor Environmental Performance).
- Develop cooling solutions supporting thermal loads from 5kW up to 125 kW, including air conditioning systems and forced air and hybrid cooling solutions.
- Ensure cooling systems are suitable for continuous 24/7 operation, appropriately resilient and maintainable, aligned to actual equipment heat dissipation and duty cycles.
- Support energy efficiency objectives without compromising network resilience.
- Main Equipment Room & Base Station Hotel Fit-Outs
- Lead the electrical and mechanical design and integration of MER fit-outs, including power distribution and containment, cooling and ventilation systems, equipment layouts, access clearances, and maintenance zones.
- Integrate physical security measures, including controlled access, segregation of operator equipment and interfaces with monitoring systems.
- Coordinate fire detection and life safety systems, ensuring alignment with Building fire strategies, BS 5839 (Fire Detection and Alarm Systems) and BS 5266 (Emergency Lighting).
- Ensure appropriate fire stopping and compartmentation where services penetrate fire-rated boundaries.
- Verify the functionality, reliability, and safety of integrated electrical and mechanical fit-outs through testing and troubleshooting.
- Earthing, Bonding & Lightning Protection
- Design earthing and bonding systems in accordance with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) and BS EN 50174 (ICT & Telecoms Cabling).
- Design lightning protection systems in accordance with BS EN 62305 (LPS).
- Ensure protection of personnel, equipment and service continuity for masts, rooftop structures and outdoor cabinets and exposed infrastructure.
- Design Documentation, Specification & Technical Assurance
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and produce fully detailed, construction-ready electrical and mechanical designs.
- Prepare technical specification documents suitable for tender, procurement, and installation.
- Develop Bills of Materials (BOMs) and support cost and value engineering reviews.
- Review, check and technically assure designs produced by internal teams and third parties.
- Support the Solution Design Manager with formal design assurance, technical reviews, and sign-off activities.
- Identify opportunities for innovation to drive efficiencies for Boldyn and our customers.
- Safety, CDM & Statutory Compliance
- Support CDM 2015 designer duties, ensuring design risks are identified, mitigated, and communicated to the Principal Designer.
- Embed Safety by Design principles, ensuring systems are safe to install, operate, maintain, and decommission.
- Support engagement with Building Control, fire authorities and other statutory stakeholders where required.
- Standardisation & Internal Capability Development
- Develop and maintain standard electrical and mechanical design templates, reference architectures, and specifications.
- Standardise power and cooling solutions across site typologies to improve quality, consistency, and delivery efficiency.
- Act as an internal M&E technical authority, reducing dependency on external consultants.
- Support continuous improvement through lessons learned and best-practice application.
What You’ll Bring
- Essential:
- Minimum 5 years’ M&E experience in telecoms, wireless or related infrastructure design.
- Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Strong working knowledge of UK design standards, including: BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), UK Building Regulations (Parts A, B, F and L), BS 5266 and 5839, BS EN 378, BS EN 16798, BS EN 50174, and BS EN 62305.
- Demonstrable experience designing three-phase power systems, resilient architectures and high-density cooling solutions for telecoms or mission-critical environments.
- In-depth understanding of MNO equipment power and cooling requirements, including Transmission kit, BBUs, RRUs and PSUs.
- Proven capability producing technical specifications, detailed designs and BOMs.
- Experience acting as an internal technical authority, engaging directly with building engineers, landlords and statutory bodies.
- Skilled communicator with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Desirable:
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (Ieng).
- Experience delivering telecommunication equipment rooms, MERs or base station hotel fit-outs.
- Experience with street furniture cabinets and street lighting columns.
- Experience in Earthing, Bonding & Lightning Protection.
- Formal training in critical infrastructure, fire systems, or mission-critical environments.
