Boeing Defence United Kingdom (BDUK) Ltd are currently delivering the Long Term Training and Support Service (LTTSS) for the Apache AH-64E. In order to support this capability, Boeing are seeking to recruit an additional Maintenance Test Pilot (MTP) to support the Post Phase Maintenance activities conducted by our Approved Maintenance Organisation at Middle Wallop. The role will report into the Boeing Test & Evaluation organisation. Applicants for this role do not need to have been previously qualified as MTPs. MTP training will be given to equip applicants selected with the knowledge and skills they require to complete this role to the required standard.

In this role you will:

  • Conduct all sequences as specified in the Maintenance Test Flight Manual following any post maintenance activity.
  • Act as Pilot in Command or 1st Pilot as part of either a Boeing or mixed Authority crew.

As an AH‑64E Maintenance Test Pilot you will be responsible for:

  • Planning and conducting post Phase Maintenance ground runs or flight tests in accordance with the Maintenance Test Flight Manual.
  • Ensuring aircraft airworthiness and serviceability following extensive disassembly for maintenance, repair, replacement or modification of components or aircraft systems.
  • Reviewing serviceability deficiencies and providing resolution advice through briefings or written reports to aircrew and maintenance personnel.
  • Planning, coordinating and conducting delivery flights as required.
  • Providing additional support to or conducting the role of Duty Crew/Authorising Officer on the training squadrons.
  • Conducting other secondary duties as required or tasked by either the Boeing management or the military chain of command.
  • Providing supervision and mentorship where appropriate and qualified to do so of other MTPs.
  • Identifying risks, issues and opportunities and supporting the development of mitigation plans associated with post maintenance test flying.
  • Providing SME input to the selection, training, employment, sustainment and assurance of any personnel who may be assigned to Flying Maintainer duties should such a capability be instigated by BDUK.
  • Supporting the further development and maintenance of safety process.
  • Interfacing with other key stakeholders around the business to provide aircraft technical Subject Matter Expertise and to recommend solutions.
  • Assisting in ensuring technical accuracy, completeness and quality of any reports delivered.

Some UK travel is expected for the completion of initial MTP training and for the conduct of future delivery/ferry flights. The MTP course for any candidate not already qualified will be delivered in the United States of America.

Required skills and experience:

  • Current or previous Certificate of Qualification on Type for the Apache. AH-64E experience would be highly desirable.
  • Must have previously been awarded a military pilot’s flying brevet from a NATO country.
  • Possess a detailed technical knowledge of either UK Apache Mk1 or Apache AH-64E.
  • Must be able to pass a UK military aviation medical ideally without any limitations.
  • Able to identify when safety within the flying environment may be compromised and can be relied upon to act decisively to improve aviation safety.
  • The role will have significant UK MoD and wider Boeing interface and therefore a person who is diplomatic whilst being strong minded is required.

Preferred proficiencies:

  • Prior AH-64E qualification would be highly desirable.
  • Prior MTP qualification or evidence of enhanced technical knowledge or maintenance test flying would be highly desirable.
  • Clear communication skills and an ability to convey messages simply and effectively orally and via written reports.
  • Be fully aware of general aviation principles and have detailed experience of flying in the UK.
  • Previous Air Safety Officer qualification or experience.
  • Analysis of problems and generation of solutions.
  • Accuracy in flying parameters and generation of data.
  • Proven attention to detail and meticulousness in ensuring the correct standard or pass thresholds are achieved.
  • An ability to multi-task between different work strands.
  • Able to effectively execute and seek opportunities to improve strategies, processes and project plans.
  • Assist with removal of obstacles by identifying where help is needed and coordinating with the appropriate leaders and team members.
