Role overview: BDUK is seeking an experienced Import / Export Specialist to join the Supply Chain Planning & Integration Team supporting the UK Rotorcraft Chinook programme. This role will manage import and export activity in support of multiple defence platforms, working closely with internal stakeholders, freight forwarders, customs brokers, Global Trade Controls to ensure compliant, timely and cost-effective movement of goods.

Key responsibilities:

  • Analyse import documentation and prepare customs clearance instructions using Boeing tools and nominated customs brokers.
  • Liaise with freight forwarders and nominated points of contact to ensure successful delivery.
  • Attend Internal Control Plan briefs and apply customs regimes and licensing (e.g. Section 5, Halon, Inward/Outward Processing, Supplementary Declarations).
  • Maintain import registers, check customs entry forms against issued instructions and record licence details.
  • Record and monitor temporary/carnet imports, and Temporary Admission authorisations.
  • Request customs post entries and maintain the post entry log.
  • Provide shipping updates to supply chain and liaise with receipts team; investigate and resolve shipping issues and documentation amendments.
  • Vet dangerous goods documentation and ensure compliance with IATA regulations; prepare Shipper's Declarations for Dangerous Goods where required.
  • Process SSC invoices for customs brokerage, coordinate approvals and enter into SAP.
  • Support audits and customs requests from GTC.
  • Maintain commodity code classifications in US GTC's Import Management Module (IMM) and SAP GTS where applicable.
  • Prepare export request forms: confirm Military List rating, UK security grading, ECCN, licensing and commodity codes; record on export request and classification database.
  • Make export bookings with freight forwarders and customs brokers and apply correct export licences/procedure codes; update and complete compliance checks on the export register.
  • Liaise with asset management and engineering to resolve part discrepancies and coordinate with warehouse teams for unserviceable components.
  • Adhere to BDUK import/export processes and provide required DG notifications to warehouse, supply chain and REACH.

Essential, basic qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a supply chain role.
  • Experience with inventory management / ERP systems (ideally SAP).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Strong numeracy, analytical and reporting skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks from proposal through execution.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills; team-oriented and able to work across functions and with customers.
  • Self-motivated and able to work autonomously with minimal direction.
  • Ability to obtain UK Security Clearance (SC) — UK residency required by UK Government.

Preferred qualifications (nice to have):

  • IATA Dangerous goods by Air, ADR Dangerous goods by Road, IMDG, Dangerous goods by Sea or a willingness to complete these certifications.
  • Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Qualifications.
  • The Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade (CIE) Qualifications.
  • Accredited Industry professional qualifications, for example Strong & Herd.
  • Experience working with the UK MoD and government contracts.
