The Team
The Software Engineering and Systems Integration team in the UK actively works across Boeing Defence, Commercial Airplanes, Global Services and Unmanned Technologies.
The Software Engineering team develops Synthetic Environment Sub‑systems, Mission Systems Capability, Autonomous Behaviours, enhancements to Ground Control Systems, Technical Publications and various in‑house proprietary tools for Defence platforms.
The team also contributes to Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) Seats Certification.
The Role
Seat Systems Software Certification Engineer (Associate or Experienced level) based in Bristol, UK.
The role supports the growing BCA Seats statement of work (So W) by certifying and delivering safe and reliable airborne software components in collaboration with suppliers and global Boeing sites.
The engineer ensures compliance with EASA and/or FAA standards, and contributes to the certification process against DO‑178B/C objectives across all Statements of Intent (SOIs).
- Hiring Details
- This is a locally hired position in Bristol, UK. Benefits and pay are determined locally and are not part of Boeing U. S. based payroll.
- The position is expected to be hybrid with 3 days working from office. Requirements for onsite work may change at the hiring team’s discretion.
- Business Travel: travel up to 25% of working time to collaborate with stakeholders across the UK (Bristol, Fleet, Frimley) and internationally.
- Position Responsibilities
- Review suppliers’ software lifecycle data throughout all phases of the software lifecycle.
- Perform supplier audits and ensure deliverables meet Boeing standards and regulatory expectations.
- Oversee and verify the compliance preparation and submission of technical documentation required for certification.
- Collaborate with regulatory representatives, Boeing EUMs, suppliers and global sites to ensure design compliance with regulatory and internal standards.
- Prepare and maintain certification packages and software compliance documentation for authorities; respond to technical inquiries and auditor requests.
- Monitor project progress and performance, ensuring engineering solutions meet all safety and certification milestones.
- Develop, document and maintain software architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs.
- Automate the certification process where possible.
- Provide expertise during certification reviews, design reviews, and regulator meetings; travel to supplier sites, test labs, and regulator sessions as needed.
- Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree or higher in engineering, engineering technology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science from an accredited institution.
- Ability to obtain security clearance.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Level 2 (Associate)
- 2+ years of experience with avionics or embedded software development/verification.
- 2+ years applying DO‑178C/ED‑12C (or prior DO‑178B) with familiarity in planning, traceability, verification, reviews, and certification artifacts.
- 2+ years with Software Lifecycle Data Items and standards such as DO‑330, DO‑331.
- Level 3 (Experienced)
- 5+ years in avionics software development life cycles, configuration management and agile practices.
- 5+ years applying DO‑178C/ED‑12C (or prior DO‑178B) with familiarity in planning, traceability, verification, reviews, and certification artifacts.
- 5+ years developing, documenting and maintaining architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software systems.
- Knowledge of DO‑254 interactions when seat controllers include custom hardware.
- Strong background in real‑time embedded software, RTOS, device drivers and HW–SW integration for avionics ECUs.
- 5+ years leading software development projects.
- Experience with Git or equivalent version control tools.
- Experience with Agile planning tools such as JIRA, Git Lab or similar.
- Domain expertise in Commercial Airplanes Seats.
