Responsible for the management, control and reporting of programme-level costs, revenue and balance sheets across multiple projects to ensure accurate reporting, robust cost control, compliance with accounting policy, internal controls and accurate, timely financial insight. Acts as the primary finance partner to the Senior Accounting Manager, FP&A and BUI/FA Managers to drive cost discipline, transparency and accountability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare month-end close inputs, and validate balance sheet items (prepayments, accruals, inventory/Work in Progress) relating to OREC at a program level.
  • Reconcile programme financials with general ledger and ensure month-end close activities are completed for assigned programmes.
  • Prepare and support audit requests, external reporting, compliance checks and internal governance reviews; maintain a robust audit trail.
  • Support intercompany accounting and reporting.
  • Drive continuous improvement: automate routine reporting, standardise templates, and apply best-practice cost control techniques.
  • Coach and guide project accountants / junior cost analysts; ensure consistent processes and high data quality across the programme.
  • Train and advise programme staff on financial processes, cost capture and reporting requirements - internal and external.
  • Support compliance with corporate accounting policies, IFRS/GAAP and statutory requirements; support internal and external audits.
  • Engage stakeholders—Accounting Manager, FP&A and BUI/FA Managers—to ensure timely, accurate cost inputs and alignment on forecasts and reporting cycles.
  • Support accounting/finance project work and roll out to wider teams eg Hedging, bifurcated profit and loss.
  • Act as a conduit between BDUK Finance Operations Team and International Controllership ensuring clear and open communication with a proactive approach, resolving any issues/actions arising promptly.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Typically, 3–8 years’ experience in programme/project accounting, cost control or commercial finance — experience on large, multi-year programmes.
  • Experience in the relevant industry (e.g., aerospace, defence, construction, engineering, IT programmes).
  • Experience with contract types common to the industry (fixed-price, cost-plus, time & materials) and associated accounting treatments.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA).
  • Strong programme and project accounting knowledge.
  • Solid understanding of EAC processes and related requirements.
  • Knowledge of Defcars reporting requirements and deliverables.
  • Proficiency with ERP/finance systems (e.g., SAP, CSPR, FPCR, EPAS) and project cost modules.
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, modelling); familiarity with Power BI/Tableau is desirable.
  • Familiar with Earned Value Management and project financial metrics.
  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Good commercial awareness.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; able to explain complex financial information to non-finance audiences.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight reporting deadlines.
