The Music Section is part of the Bodleian Libraries' Special Collections and cares for one of the UK's most significant music collections. You will play a key operational role supporting academics, students and readers from Oxford and around the world. You will manage reader requests, retrieve and return collection material, assist with routine enquiries, support the use of library catalogues and electronic resources, help maintain and process the music collections, contribute to legal deposit work, and assist with newly acquired collections. The role also involves handling rare and fragile materials with care and working collaboratively within a small specialist team.
This is a permanent, full-time post, working 36.5 hours per week. This role requires lifting and carrying books, boxes of sheet music and other library materials in line with manual handling guidance. Due to the nature of this post, the successful candidate will be required to undertake a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check due to unsupervised access to rare and valuable collections.
You will have the ability to read music and a good general knowledge of the western classical tradition, together with excellent communication and customer service skills. You will be able to work accurately at pace, both independently and as part of a small team, and will have good general IT skills. You will take a thoughtful approach to handling rare and sensitive materials, be reliable and organised, and be capable of lifting and moving books. Previous library or customer service experience and familiarity with music reference resources would be advantageous.
