The opportunity has arisen for a Senior Quantity Surveyor to work within our growing Cost Management team of BNP Paribas Real Estate, located in Birmingham. The Cost Management Team is part of the wider national Building Consultancy department, which offers professional services to Occupier, Investor, and Developer clients, as well as internal teams. This role offers an exciting chance to contribute to the growth of the Cost Management service line and to gain experience across sectors including industrial, commercial, and residential.

The ideal candidate is a Senior Quantity Surveyor with experience in consultancy or client-side delivery within the building, construction, and real estate industry, aiming to develop their career further. The successful applicant will demonstrate relevant project experience and a strong track record in delivering cost consultancy services throughout all project stages from inception to completion. Reporting to an Associate Director, the role involves high client contact from the start and opportunities to build networks. The candidate must be self-motivated, capable of managing their workload independently, and able to work within multidisciplinary teams providing integrated services to clients.

Roles and responsibilities

The Cost Management team handles a broad range of services and projects. We seek someone eager to develop their career further. Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing instructions and client briefings, and delivering projects from inception to completion, reporting to an Associate Director;
  • Assisting in feasibility studies and option appraisals;
  • Preparing feasibility cost estimates and detailed cost plans through RIBA Workstages;
  • Applying practical knowledge and advising on construction procurement strategies, including tendering and contracting;
  • Providing contractual advice considering legislation affecting building contracts;
  • Managing tender processes and preparing tender and contract documents;
  • Handling cost management and contract administration tasks, including payments, valuations, variations, and final accounts;
  • Conducting reinstatement cost assessments;
  • Supporting benchmarking and knowledge management through data collection;
  • Performing construction cost peer assessments;
  • Providing cost advice to internal teams.

In addition to technical duties, the candidate will engage in business development activities from day one, supporting and eventually managing client relationships at senior levels, and identifying new business opportunities. The candidate will be expected to:

  • Follow established processes diligently;
  • Proactively solve problems, consulting with experienced colleagues as needed;
  • Be organized, structured, and diligent;
  • Possess broad knowledge of related disciplines;
  • Adhere to BNPPRE’s quality management procedures.

Skills and competencies required:

  • Strong pre- and post-contract cost management experience;
  • Practical skills in cost estimating and planning;
  • Understanding of construction procurement strategies;
  • Ability to administer construction contracts as Cost Manager, Contract Administrator, or Employer’s Agent;
  • Excellent negotiation, financial, and numeracy skills;
  • Effective communication and report writing skills;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and specialist software like CostX;
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with clients, consultants, and contractors;
  • Sector knowledge in Commercial, Office Fit Out, Industrial, and Residential sectors is beneficial but not essential;
  • Experience in project monitoring services is preferred but not mandatory.

The candidate should be personable, proactive, and detail-oriented, with strong IT, time management, and communication skills, capable of working accurately within a busy team environment.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying from an accredited institution;
  • MRICS or similar qualification preferred;
  • Valid full driving license required.
