BMW Group Plant Hams Hall is a modern, state-of-the-art engine manufacturing facility, located just outside Birmingham, UK. Producing the latest generation of three and four cylinder petrol engines as well as V8 and V12 engines, the plant has recently celebrated 20 years of successful production. Operating seven days a week with more than one engine rolling off the line per minute, the plant plays a key role in BMW Group’s global production network, supplying engines for BMW and MINI, including some of the latest plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Level 6 Material Control Apprentice – 3 Year Business Apprenticeship (August 2026)Â
We are seeking a Material Control Apprentice who can learn through the course of this Business Apprenticeship within BMW Plant Hams Hall and eventually look to consider a full-time position with the Material Control & Transport (Supply Chain) department, subject to meeting expected standards of performance. Working within engine manufacturing, specifically within the logistics function. Our team is responsible for ensuring on time delivery of engine components to the engine assembly areas. Our team ensure parts are available for build in 2 European engine plants – Hams Hall and Steyr. With lean stocks and just-in-time deliveries into all plants, a stable supply chain is essential. We are looking for a self-motivated, driven individual to support us in this fast-moving environment.
What awaits you?Â
- Supporting the team both in an operational and project capacity.
- Material planning within the BMW network including Hams Hall, Steyr and Munich for the commodities under the control of the Material Control department at Hams Hall.
- Communicating with assembly planning and physical logistics departments at both Steyr and Hams Hall.
- Scheduling of assembly components to support both Baukasten and V series engine requirements.
- Working with external suppliers to ensure process adherence and data quality.
- Performance monitoring of suppliers and hauliers along with timely escalation of critical supply topics using recognised tools and techniques.
- Driving Hauliers through Performance Reviews to ensure we protect production, improve supply to schedule and load quality
Your TrainingÂ
The training that you receive during your apprenticeship involves studying modern, state-of-the-art automotive production technology as well as the latest innovations in manufacturing techniques.
The BMW Group offers an enhanced level 6 degree apprenticeship commencing end of August 2026. The three year programme is designed to enable you to experience different aspects of engineering and production technology, including controls systems, machining, fluid power, electronics, welding, and many more.
Alongside the practical logistics and business skills that are gained, the program will also focus on your personal and professional development where you will have exposure to a number of business techniques such as Agile, Lean Manufacturing and Problem Solving.
Qualifications and ExperienceÂ
- A minimum of 5 GCSE’s (or equivalent) at level 5/C (or above) including Maths and English.
- A minimum of 2 A levels grade C or above both in a mathematical based subject and a Science, Technology, Engineering related subject or a BTEC Level 3 in a relevant Engineering or Technology discipline.
- A confident and inquisitive nature is essential – we actively encourage our apprentices to question our processes, not only to support your learning but to also allow for process improvements to be identified.
- Strong focus on systems with a keen interest in IT enabled processes and digitalisation.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as is an eager willingness to learn new processes, methods, and technologies.

Your Year-on-Year ProgressionÂ
The three-year programme is designed to enable you to experience different aspects of Logistics Programme Planning, Material Control Transport, Physical Logistics and many more processes. This training takes place at Plant Hams Hall and a local college. Additionally, there will be a strong focus on all aspects of logistics quality.
The first year of the program is purely in a learning environment where in addition to starting the academic requirements of your program in Business and Procurement.
Following this, you will undertake competency-based training while working on site and start your degree program with the foundation degree in year one and finishing a full degree by the end of the apprenticeship.
The placements give you the chance to experience the business, whilst carrying out business relevant projects alongside your study. You will have the opportunity to take advantage of the benefits of working for a world-class global automotive manufacturer, networking with people of different nationalities and to put theory directly into practice.
You will then be gaining further practical experience, by joining the Logistics Material Control team as your placement role. These teams are responsible for ensuring that the timely supply of production material to ensure engine assembly in Plant Hams Hall. Our processes are enabled by state of the art highly systemised web based solutions  to steer both our production and our hauliers. Finally, by the end of the apprenticeship, you will have also finished your degree.
