About the role: We are increasingly using our knowledge and expertise to drive transformative designs, technology and solutions around the world that will contribute towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). BMT’s focus SDGs are Climate Action and Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. These goals matter most to our stakeholders and are where we believe we can have the greatest impact towards a better future.
We are seeking individuals who are passionate about addressing these global challenges and are proactive in finding opportunities to integrate sustainable practices as part of their role. As a Submarine Safety Engineering Consultant, you will provide technical safety support, and subject matter advice, to a wide and varied number of current and future submarine and underwater system related projects, directly supporting the UK submarine community.
Your knowledge and experience of submarine operations, and equipment (including maintenance and repair processes and procedures) will allow you to support the delivery of safety projects to schedule, quality and budget, to meet the requirements of our clients; UK legislation; and associated regulations, standards, and policies.
We are committed to giving our employees every opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills, enabling each member of BMT to reach their full potential. You will be provided with the required learning and development opportunities in order for you to undertake the technical aspects of this role.
Office Location & Flexibility: In terms of location, we have offices across the UK and we are happy to explore flexible and hybrid working arrangements. Please note that travel to client sites or to attend meetings will be required. This role is available part-time, job-share or full time. This is because we want the best people for our roles, and we recognise that sometimes those people aren’t available full-time.
About you: This role would suit an ex-Submariner looking to progress into a career in safety engineering. You will ideally have experience of the operation and/or maintenance of Royal Navy (RN) submarines and equipment, and preferably (but not essential) knowledge of appropriate technical documentation and an understanding of safety requirements.
Additionally, you may also:
- Be familiar with the safety management for Nuclear Facilities and the associated Authorising Conditions and Site Licensing arrangements;
- Be familiar with the application of safety regulation, policy and standards, with experience relevant to UK MOD approaches to submarine safety such as: Defence Safety Authority (DSA) Regulations, Defence Nuclear Safety Regulations, Naval Authority Certification, Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) Safety Policy and Management systems;
- Have practical experience in the development and management of hazard logs; supporting and facilitating HAZID and hazard review meetings; and authoring safety assessment/safety case reports, including providing justification of the ALARP status of the product.
- You will be knowledgeable in statutory safety legislation and how to attain, and manage, legislation compliance;
- Have excellent communication skills and the ability to present professionally, both verbally and in writing, as much of our work is directly customer focused.
- We also welcome your analytical thinking skills and your ability to work well in a team;
- Be self-motivated with a proactive approach to professional accreditation, such as IEng or CEng.
We value professional qualifications and professional registration with appropriate bodies, and we can provide support, training, and tailored experience for you to achieve these, if not already held.
Please note, to be considered for this role you must be eligible to hold UK Security Clearance at SC level and will be subject to security checks. We expect you to share our passion for creating a more environmentally and socially sustainable future for all our stakeholders.

BMT are passionate about people; we recognise that technology moves quickly and that no one can learn everything, which is why we seek those who can adapt and demonstrate the aptitude to learn.
