Our Naval Architecture Capability is currently expanding, and we have positions for Senior Structural Naval Architects / Senior Structural Engineers with +4 years of experience to enhance our existing team. We are looking for candidates that are keen to develop their career in structural design and analysis, with a focus on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and rule-based design, but also broader aspects of business development, project management and line management in this customer facing role, with a view to underpinning the core of our Structures team.
BMT’s Naval Architects enjoy an environment where we constantly challenge ourselves, our partners and our competitors. You will be self-motivated, innovative, flexible and able, both individually and as part of a team, to consistently deliver a range of high-quality advice and consultancy to our customers. You will be responsible for contributing to a range of varied and challenging projects that will both deliver success for our clients and develop your skills and experience. You will also have the opportunity to work on internal research and development projects generated and led by you and your colleagues. Our team is currently working on platform designs for home and foreign navies, with recent projects including the design of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Tide Class Tankers and Future Solid Support Ships (FSS) and Royal Navy’s Type 31 Frigate. Our team also actively supports the UK’s in-service submarines, the development of warship concept designs for overseas clients and through-life support for both ships and submarines.
We are committed to the long-term training and career development of our people. In terms of location, we have offices around the UK although the team is primarily centred around Bath/Bristol therefore there is a preference for you to be based in this area. We are happy to explore flexible and hybrid working arrangements. Please note that travel to customer sites or to attend meetings will be required. This role is available full time.
About you: You will undertake and lead structural analysis and design work, including the application of FEA techniques, on a wide range of ship and submarine design and in-service support projects. You will have:
- A degree, or equivalent, in Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture or related disciplines;
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status with a recognised professional body would be beneficial; however, BMT offers good prospects for developing and gaining the necessary experience for those who have yet to achieve this;
- Experience in linear and non-linear analysis of structures using Finite Element modelling techniques (ANSYS preferred but not essential) and/or experience in dynamic analysis and assessment of shock scenarios would be advantageous;
- Experience of undertaking FEA of equipment foundations and/or experience of undertaking structural design and analysis would be beneficial;
- Experience in analysis from first principles and assessment of structure to rules (Lloyd’s Register Rules and Regulations and/or British Standards) is expected;
- Experience in Project Management and in the supervision and management of project teams would be beneficial;
- We require good interpersonal and presentation skills with the ability to communicate directly with our customers;
- A background in naval surface ship and/or submarine structures is preferred but applicants with a good track record in structural analysis from other industries will be considered.
