About The Role

We are currently looking for innovative and inspiring individuals who have the passion and drive to join our forward-thinking Structures & Materials Team.

Our Naval Architecture capability is currently expanding, and we have a position for a Naval Architect (structures) / Structural Engineer with 2+ years’ experience of ship and/or submarine structural design and analysis, to enhance our existing team. We are looking for candidates that are keen to develop their career in structural design and analysis, with a focus on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and rule-based design, but also broader aspects of business development and project management in this client facing role, with a view to underpinning the core of the team.

BMT’s Naval Architects enjoy an environment where we constantly challenge ourselves, our partners and our competitors. You will be self-motivated, innovative, flexible and able, both individually and as part of a team, to consistently deliver a range of high-quality advice and consultancy to our clients. You will be responsible for contributing to a range of varied and challenging projects that will both deliver success for our clients and develop your skills and experience. You will also have the opportunity to work on internal research and development projects generated and led by you and your colleagues. Our team is currently working on platform designs for home and foreign navies, with recent projects including the design of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Tide Class Tankers and Future Solid Support Ships (FSS) and landing craft for the Japanese Self Defence Force. Our team also actively supports the UK’s in-service submarines, the development of warship concept designs for overseas clients and through-life support for both ships and submarines. Our Engineering Consultancy workflow supports technology development through advanced structural analysis, for example ultimate strength of damaged ship structures and fatigue strength assessment by FEA. We are committed to the long-term training and career development of our people.

About You

You will undertake and progress to lead structural analysis and design work, including the application of FEA techniques, on a wide range of ship and submarine design and in-service support projects.

You Will Have

  • A degree, or equivalent, in Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture or related disciplines;
  • Experience in analysis from first principles and assessment of structure to rules (e.g. Lloyd’s Register Rules and Regulations and/or British Standards);
  • Good interpersonal and presentation skills with the ability to communicate directly within project teams and with our clients;
  • Experience in linear and non-linear analysis of structures using Finite Element modelling techniques (ANSYS preferred but not essential) and/or experience in dynamic analysis and assessment of shock scenarios would be beneficial;
  • Experience of undertaking FEA of equipment foundations and/or experience of undertaking structural design and analysis would be beneficial;
  • Membership of a recognised professional body, working towards Chartered Engineer status would be beneficial; and
  • A background in naval surface ship and/or submarine structures is preferred but applicants with a good track record in structural analysis from other industries will be considered.

Missing skills? Let us be the judge! BMT are passionate about people; we recognise that technology moves quickly and that no one can learn everything, which is why we seek those who can adapt and demonstrate the aptitude to learn. With enthusiasm and the right attitude, we can help you discover your potential.

This role will require full UK security clearance, and you should have resided in the UK for the past 5 years.

What\’s Next?

If you are ready to contribute your skills and passion to a dynamic team addressing impactful challenges, we invite you to apply for this exciting opportunity with BMT. Join us in shaping a safer, more efficient, and sustainable future.
