A major South Wales construction sub‑contractor is seeking an experienced Pre‑Construction Mechanical Director to lead the front‑end development of major mechanical and building services packages. This is a senior strategic appointment offering significant influence over project direction, bid quality and client engagement.
The Opportunity
You will spearhead all pre‑construction mechanical activities, shaping bid strategies, developing technical solutions, leading tender processes and ensuring the company secures and mobilises successful, profitable projects. Working closely with directors, estimators, designers and delivery teams, you will act as the technical authority for mechanical solutions at bid stage.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead pre‑construction activities for mechanical packages across multiple projects.
- Oversee technical development of mechanical solutions from concept to tender submission.
- Work with estimators to produce accurate, competitive and properly scoped tenders.
- Engage with clients, consultants and principal contractors to develop winning strategies.
- Review designs, specifications and scope documents for technical and commercial alignment.
- Drive value engineering opportunities and buildability improvements.
- Provide leadership and mentoring to pre‑construction and engineering teams.
- Coordinate early procurement strategies and supplier engagement.
- Support handover to project delivery teams with full technical and commercial clarity.
- Represent the business at high‑level meetings and industry forums.
Required:
- Previous experience in mechanical building services or M&E contracting.
- Previous experience in a senior pre‑construction, bid, design‑management or technical director‑level role.
- Proven track record leading mechanical elements of tenders on commercial, industrial or large‑scale construction projects.
- Demonstrated ability to develop mechanical solutions, challenge designs and lead value engineering.
- Experience engaging with clients, consultants and principal contractors at a senior level.
- Strong commercial understanding of tenders, risk, scope, programme and cost planning.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor and develop teams across pre‑construction and engineering functions.
