Our client is a highly successful and growing bespoke manufacturing business based across two sites in South Gloucestershire.

Manufacturing high-quality engineered products through a combination of wood machining, electronics, assembly and finishing processes, they have built an outstanding reputation for quality, innovation and customer service.

Due to continued growth, they are now seeking an experienced Works Manager to lead all production operations and play a key role in the future development of the business.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Works Manager will take full responsibility for the day-to-day management of manufacturing operations across two production sites.

Leading a team of approximately 100 Engineers, Technicians and Production personnel, you will ensure production targets, quality standards and customer delivery requirements are consistently achieved whilst continuing to develop both the business and its people.

This is a highly visible senior leadership position where you will work in close partnership with the Managing Director and other departmental leaders.

You will be expected to provide strategic input whilst remaining hands-on enough to support the shop floor whenever the business demands it.

The successful individual will thrive within a collaborative environment, acting as a central point of reference for all operational matters and helping to shape the future direction of the manufacturing function.

Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for the day-to-day management of production operations across two manufacturing sites.
  • Lead, motivate and develop a workforce of approximately 100 Engineers, Technicians and Production personnel.
  • Ensure production schedules are achieved safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards.
  • Manage production planning, capacity planning and scheduling to ensure customer delivery commitments are met.
  • Oversee the order book, manufacturing priorities and operational resource planning.
  • Drive continuous improvements across manufacturing processes, productivity, quality and efficiency.
  • Work closely with Engineering, Purchasing, Sales, Design and Commercial teams to ensure the business operates collaboratively.
  • Act as the operational point of reference for all departments, ensuring effective communication across the organisation.
  • Support strategic business planning alongside the Managing Director.
  • Contribute to budgeting, forecasting and P&L discussions, ensuring operational performance aligns with commercial objectives.
  • Identify opportunities for investment, process improvement and future growth.
  • Develop manufacturing capability, succession planning and employee engagement across both sites.
  • Promote a positive manufacturing culture focused on teamwork, accountability, continuous improvement and customer satisfaction.
  • Remain hands-on when required, supporting engineering teams during critical production periods, tight deadlines or unexpected resource shortages.

About You

  • A qualified engineer who has progressed into Production Manager, Manufacturing Manager or Works Manager positions.
  • Demonstrable experience managing large manufacturing teams of Engineers and Technicians within a complex production environment.
  • Experience overseeing multiple manufacturing disciplines such as machining, fabrication, electronics, assembly, finishing or other engineered production processes.
  • Strong understanding of production planning, scheduling, operational management and manufacturing best practice.
  • A collaborative leader who enjoys working alongside senior management and influencing the wider business.
  • Passionate about manufacturing and committed to developing high-performing engineering teams.
  • A hands-on management style with the credibility and technical understanding to support production teams whenever required.
  • Commercially aware with experience contributing to business planning, operational strategy and P&L performance.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and leadership skills.
