BMR Solutions are working in partnership with a leading global engineering and technology business to recruit a Controls Engineer for their Bristol operation. This is an excellent opportunity to join an innovative engineering team developing advanced control and visualisation software for high-technology industrial equipment used across a range of demanding applications. The Role
As a Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for developing PLC and HMI software for new and existing products, ensuring software is delivered in accordance with functional specifications and company development procedures. You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to design, develop, test and release high-quality control software while producing the supporting documentation required throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop PLC control software using Ladder Logic, Structured Text and Function Block programming.
- Design and develop HMI applications using VB.NET or similar high-level programming languages.
- Interpret and work from software requirement specifications.
- Review technical specifications and provide engineering feedback.
- Produce software design, verification and test documentation.
- Contribute to project planning and provide regular progress updates.
- Create software release documentation, build notes and installation instructions.
- Support software configuration management, version control and release processes.
- Produce technical documentation including service manuals and user guidance.
- Carry out software testing in accordance with risk assessments and agreed procedures.
- Occasionally support customer site activities where required.
About You
You will ideally have:
- HND or Degree in Controls Engineering, Software Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline.
- Experience programming PLCs using Ladder Logic, Structured Text and Function Blocks.
- Experience developing HMI software using VB.NET or similar high-level programming languages.
- Understanding of software configuration control, version management and software release processes.
- Ability to interpret P&ID drawings and electrical schematics.
- Strong technical documentation skills.
- Excellent communication skills with a methodical approach to problem solving.
Desirable:
- Around three years' experience in controls engineering, industrial automation or special purpose machinery.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP and EtherCAT.
- Experience working within manufacturing, automation, process engineering or high-tech engineering environments.
