We are seeking a Government Affairs Associate to join our growing Government Affairs practice. A new position, this is a hands-on, intellectually demanding role for an emerging leader serious about defence and national security policy, committed to quality writing, and energised by the opportunity to operate at the intersection of defence and technology. You will work directly with the Director of Government Affairs, producing client briefings, insight papers, landscape reviews, and policy intelligence for senior stakeholders across government and industry.

The role offers a genuine trajectory: early access to senior clients, government officials, and strategic conversations. Strong contributors are given responsibility quickly. The position would be suitable for someone who can demonstrate relevant academic qualifications combined with at least two years’ relevant experience of working in Government Policy, Parliament, Think Tanks/Academia, Industry, or a comparable analytical or research environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Support production of The Rosemont Report, BMNT's bi-monthly policy publication, including research, drafting, and publication workflow under the Director's editorial oversight.
  • Draft client briefings, insight papers, landscape reviews and meeting briefs for senior government and industry audiences.
  • Monitor the UK defence, national security and resilience policy environment, including industrial strategy landscape across HMG, Parliament, Think Tanks, and Media.
  • Translate complex policy and procurement developments into clear, actionable intelligence.
  • Manage your own workload across the Government Affairs client portfolio, tracking deliverables and outputs against agreed client commitments and have the ability to manage up to support the Director’s activities.
  • Lead programme management for the BMNT Government Affairs practice through maintenance of CRM records, action logs, stakeholder trackers, and client-facing materials.
  • Prepare speeches and briefing materials for meetings, roundtables, and policy events; capture outputs and translate them into clear actions and next steps.
  • Support the design and delivery of Government Affairs events, including roundtables, dinners, and stakeholder convenings.
  • Represent BMNT at external engagements with the Director, developing your own relationships across Whitehall, Parliament, and the wider UK defence community.

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • Strong interest in UK defence, national security, resilience and technology policy.
  • Demonstrable experience of working on defence and security policy issues, likely gained from working in Government, Parliament, Industry, or a comparable setting.
  • Excellent writing: clear, concise, independently drafted work for senior audiences.
  • Strong research and close-reading ability across policy papers, parliamentary material, and procurement signals.
  • Sound judgment, organisational rigour, and ability to manage multiple workstreams.
  • Proactive, collaborative, receptive to feedback, and attentive to detail.
  • Comfortable with Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Airtable, Claude or comparable tools.
  • Willingness and eligibility to obtain ‘SC’ security clearance.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with UK defence and national security procurement frameworks, HMG policy structures, and commitments of recent policy documentation.
  • Understanding of and exposure to international collaborative efforts including through NATO, AUKUS and/or US-UK and US-Australia security programmes.
  • Familiarity with UK Government defence and national innovation policy under development through UKDI, and dual-use technology commercialisation.
  • Existing relationships within HMG, Parliament, or the wider industrial community.
  • Master's degree in policy, international affairs, security studies, or a related discipline.

What We Offer

  • £40,000-£50,000 depending on experience and level.
  • 28 days annual leave plus UK bank holidays.
  • Private health insurance and workplace pension.
  • Direct exposure to senior clients, government officials, and strategic decision-making.
  • Scope to develop your own extensive network and subject-matter authority.
  • The opportunity to contribute to thought leadership for senior officials and industry leaders.
  • Support for security vetting if required.
