We are excited to be growing BMJ Group's UX team and have a new Senior UX Designer position to fill. Come and help us get a wider understanding of user needs to design and develop products that healthcare professionals love. Join us and you’ll make a significant contribution to BMJ Group’s vision of ‘Creating a healthier world’.

The Senior UX Designer will join a growing UX team and work within the reader experience product team of our Publishing & Events line of business. This role will lead on all UX activities and UCD thinking to ensure our products and services are created with end‑users’ and customers’ input at each stage of the design/development process. The primary focus will be on BMJ Group’s journals, continuing to make our content more accessible and usable, while improving its reach and impact. This role will involve innovation and collaboration with users and partners.

We are looking for someone who understands the value of thinking and can solve problems using data, research and experience testing, and together with an understanding of front‑end and design concepts, can create engaging experiences that are commercially successful.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a user‑centred design (UCD) approach to support BMJ Group’s growing journals portfolio, drawing on the necessary UX methods and tools relevant to any given project.
  • Take complex requirements and create conceptual designs and user journeys to solve usability issues and customer problems.
  • Plan and conduct iterative user research and usability testing for gathering insight on user needs and behaviours, both face‑to‑face and remotely.
  • Augment, improve and maintain design systems.
  • Facilitate multidisciplinary teams to identify and understand market/user problems.
  • Ensure products are designed and developed accessibly and inclusively in line with WCAG 2.2 AA standards.
  • Follow, advocate for, our in‑house product development process.
  • Present progress on projects and research findings in a concise and compelling way to large groups and stakeholders of varying seniority.
  • Work closely with our Senior User Researcher and Experimentation Lead on qualitative and quantitative research activities.
Apply if you …
  • Are an expert in interaction design; rapidly putting user needs, stakeholder requirements and usability best practice into a justifiable design (sketch, wireframe or prototype) and communicating this to non‑UX teams and eliciting feedback from end‑users.
  • Balance the needs of users with those of the business while considering technical constraints.
  • Think people first so that solutions work across appropriate environments and device‑types.
  • Understand complex scenarios and can translate them into conceptual designs and user journeys via clickable prototypes to test and iterate with users.
  • Support, influence and convince stakeholders to consider the needs of their users and customers above their own ideas and opinions.
  • Have excellent communication skills, which are essential when working in an agile, remote‑first product delivery environment with an off‑shore dev team.
  • Bring multi‑platform experience across all devices.
  • Can demonstrate significant experience with wireframing and parity of Figma (req.), InVision, Sketch, Axure.
  • Are familiar with remote usability testing methods and tools.
  • Having HTML/CSS skills would be a bonus as would instant A/B and MVT experimentation experience.
  • Having experience working in and understanding the world of academic publishing would also be a bonus.
