An exciting opportunity has arisen to join BMJ Group as a part-time Clinical Editor on a new journal, BMJ Surgery, that has recently launched. The new journal will expand BMJ Group's presence in this important area, complementing its existing titles in adjacent specialties.
The successful candidate will work with the Editor-in-Chief and BMJ Group Publishing staff to establish the new journal and develop its reach, impact and influence internationally. The post is 0.4 FTE and is expected to be undertaken over two full working days (core hours between 0900-1700) each week to meet role and team requirements.
Responsibilities include:
- Work with the Editor-in-Chief and BMJ Group to develop and maintain a relevant and coherent editorial strategy and vision for the journal.
- Maintain and ensure the integrity of the review process and publishing ethics, providing guidance to authors, reviewers and editors as appropriate.
- Support the Editor-in-Chief to recruit and manage editorial team members in line with BMJ Group's EDI policy.
- Train and support editorial board members and associate editors.
- Add value by commissioning editorials, reviews, educational material and online content, and seeking opportunities to publish topic collections and supplements.
- Attend editorial meetings to discuss manuscripts in process, as well as problematic or controversial editorial content.
- Work with the publishing and editorial production teams to move content smoothly through the editorial process.
- Use and report data and analytics to inform decisions about editorial strategy.
- Be an ambassador for the journal, taking part in external outreach, conferences and meetings to promote the journal and develop relationships.
- Work collaboratively with the editorial team of BMJ Connections Surgery, an open access companion journal, to facilitate the transfer of suitable manuscripts rejected from BMJ Surgery.
