Senior Manager – Data Protection, Privacy and Corporate / Commercial

Join BMG’s team in this newly established role within the Legal & Business Affairs department! We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced lawyer with a strong emphasis on data protection, compliance and corporate/commercial legal matters. In this critical position, you will ensure that BMG’s operations adhere to legal and regulatory requirements, particularly in the areas of privacy and data security. You will provide strategic legal counsel on corporate governance and various commercial business transactions, helping to guide our organisation toward success in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Key Responsibilities:

Data Protection and Privacy

  1. Work with the Global Privacy and Data Protection Compliance Manager, to ensure compliance with regional and global data protection and privacy laws, including the UK Data Protection Act, GDPR, and other relevant regulations.
  2. Assist the Global Privacy and Data Protection Compliance Manager to draft, review, and update privacy policies, data processing agreements and data protection provisions across a broad range of commercial agreements.
  3. Advise on potential data breaches, data subject access requests, regulatory notifications and mitigation strategies.
  4. Assist Global Privacy and Data Protection Compliance Manager to conduct data protection impact assessments and liaise with department heads to provide guidance on data handling, retention and transfer best practices.
  5. Raise awareness on data protection across the whole BMG UK team, conduct staff training initiatives, and act as the first port-of-call for all data protection and privacy related issues.

Corporate / Commercial

  1. Assist the VP LBA UK and Head Office Corporate Legal (as applicable) with negotiation of commercial agreements between BMG and various third-party service providers as required (e.g. marketing, software-as-a-service platforms, events venue owners, direct-to-consumer distribution partners).
  2. Assist VP LBA UK with UK M&A pipeline and the negotiation of related asset and share acquisition purchase agreements.
  3. Support Legal and Business Affairs team in developing and maintaining its suite of precedents for its non-music rights agreements (e.g. service agreements with marketing freelancers/influencers, competition Terms & Conditions).
  4. Opportunity to work on music rights related agreements.

Compliance

  1. Assist VP LBA UK Head Office Corporate Legal and Compliance team, and Bertelsmann (BMG’s parent company) with UK compliance matters.
  2. Assist Head Office Corporate Legal with development and maintenance of BMG UK’s compliance framework to ensure adherence to applicable laws, industry standards, codes of practice, and internal policies.
  3. Liaise closely with the UK marketing team and provide supervision within the Legal and Business Affairs team to ensure that audience engagement campaigns (e.g. fan competitions and digital activations) are conducted compliantly, from both a data protection and consumer-law perspective.
  4. Assist Head Office Corporate Legal with compliance audits, risk assessments, and internal training sessions.
  5. Monitor regulatory changes and advise on the implications for the business.

Legal Affairs

  1. Assist Legal and Business Affairs team with new areas of business as and when necessary.
  2. Provide reporting and critical updates/communication on significant UK legal and business affairs matters to VP, LBA UK and General Counsel/EVP Global LBA.
  3. Advise UK Board and senior management on various legal issues such as legal rights, and new and existing laws which impact the business.
  4. Ensure that BMG benefits from an increasingly digital, global commercial music environment.
  5. Assist VP, LBA UK to develop initiatives to improve legal processes, workflows, and the overall efficiency of the Legal & Business Affairs Department.
  6. Actively support and collaborate with other departments in the initiation, development and implementation of processes and policies.

Your Profile:

  1. Experience working in data protection, privacy and compliance, whether in-house or private practice. Experience within the media sector is advantageous.
  2. Ability to interpret complex and technical legislation and develop policy and processes, to ensure regulatory compliance.
  3. A qualified lawyer or equivalent experience, working at a reputable law firm and/or in-house environment.
  4. First class drafting skills, organisation and ability to meet strict deadlines.
  5. A pro-active, creative and resilient candidate that demonstrates a collaborative approach.
  6. We’re seeking a candidate with strong interest in music and the music business, and a keen interest in law concerning the music industry.
