About BMJ
For more than 180 years, BMJ has been at the forefront of improving healthcare through evidence-based knowledge. Today, we’re helping transform scholarly publishing by expanding access to high-quality research through innovative Open Access and Read & Publish agreements with universities, research institutions and national library consortia around the world. As part of our long-term commercial growth strategy, we’re investing in our international sales organisation to accelerate growth in strategically important markets. This newly created role offers the opportunity to build BMJ’s presence across these markets and play a pivotal role in shaping our long-term commercial success.
The opportunity
This is not a traditional territory management role. You’ll be responsible for establishing BMJ’s commercial presence across a region with significant untapped potential, developing strategic relationships with universities, research organisations, national consortia and government stakeholders. Working closely with the Head of EMEA Sales & Open Access, you’ll help define market strategy, identify new opportunities and negotiate transformative publishing agreements that support the transition to Open Access. If you’re energised by creating new opportunities, opening markets and delivering sustainable commercial growth, we’d like to hear from you.
What you’ll be doing
- Develop and execute BMJ’s sales strategy across Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Central Asia.
- Build and manage a high-quality pipeline of institutional, consortium and national opportunities.
- Identify new markets, prioritise opportunities and develop territory plans based on commercial potential.
- Lead negotiations for subscription and Read & Publish agreements with universities, research institutions and national library consortia.
- Build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders across government, research and higher education.
- Develop commercial proposals and pricing within agreed frameworks, working alongside BMJ’s Senior Commercial Manager, Open Access.
- Represent BMJ at regional conferences, consortium meetings and industry events.
- Monitor competitor activity, procurement developments and market trends to inform commercial strategy.
- Maintain accurate forecasting, pipeline management and reporting using Salesforce.
About you
You’ll bring substantial experience in institutional sales within STM or academic publishing and enjoy building commercial opportunities in developing markets. You’ll be comfortable working independently across multiple countries, creating commercial strategies and negotiating with senior decision-makers. You’ll have experience of:
- Institutional or library sales within academic publishing
- Read & Publish or transformative agreements
- Library consortia and public procurement
- New market development or territory expansion
- Strategic account management
- Complex commercial negotiations
Additional Eastern European language skills would be highly advantageous.
