BMJ Digital Health has an exciting opportunity for a Section Editor to join our talented and friendly team on a permanent basis to work on BMJ Best Practice, BMJ Group’s award-winning online clinical decision support tool for doctors and other health care professionals. BMJ Best Practice provides the latest evidence-based information to underpin diagnosis and treatment decisions across more than 1,000 medical conditions and symptom presentations.

The role involves planning, commissioning, writing and editing complex medical content for a demanding international audience of clinicians.

Responsibilities

  • Section editors are responsible for curating the content in one or more medical specialities or clinical areas.
  • You will assess the latest clinical evidence and guidelines on a rolling basis, making editorial decisions as to the need for and prioritisation of content updates, in line with our processes and seeking advice from our network of expert clinical contributors as needed.
  • This particular Section Editor opportunity is to work on BMJ Best Practice’s unique Comorbidities Manager, which provides guidance on the treatment of a patient’s acute condition alongside their pre-existing comorbidities.
  • You will be working in an established editorial process and team creating and updating content for the Comorbidities Manager; using evidence to inform the content, and liaising with external experts to ensure the content is clear, accurate and practical for users.
  • You will commission, update and edit Best Practice clinical content to ensure it remains safe, accurate and consistent with the latest evidence and clinical guidelines.
  • You will reshape content to bring it in line with our style guide and make it compelling and digestible for our target audiences.
  • You will analyse and assess medical literature and evaluate (sometimes conflicting) medical opinions to inform editorial decisions.
  • You will engage with users through feedback as well as usage and other data to inform editorial decisions.

Skills

  • Strong editorial instincts, meticulous attention to detail and a confident approach, as well as proven ability to produce practice-changing, evidence-based clinical content to the highest standards and to tight deadlines.
  • The ability to work independently, editing clinical content and checking it against primary and secondary sources (guidelines, journal articles etc), making judgements on complex clinical and editorial issues.
  • The ability to critically appraise evidence developments and to extract the key take-home messages from complex medical literature.
  • An understanding of the principles of critical appraisal/evidence-based medicine is essential; formal skills and experience in this area would be highly desirable.
  • The confidence and credibility to liaise with external clinical experts, posing questions and seeking answers to highly specific queries to ensure the content is clinically accurate.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • The ability to adapt to new digital systems.
  • Strong editing and writing skills, demonstrating flawless English and clarity of thought.
  • High motivation and be an organised self-starter, able to deliver under pressure to tight deadlines.

  • A degree in a clinical/healthcare subject (e.g. medicine, pharmacy, nursing) or a degree in a biomedical science subject.
  • Clinical experience in internal medicine, care of older people, emergency medicine, or general practice will be an advantage for this particular opportunity as the ability to anticipate clinical scenarios and implications due to comorbid conditions, including frailty, is key.
  • A further degree or professional qualification in a relevant field (e.g. clinical medicine, a biomedical science, journalism, science communication).
  • Extensive previous experience devising, creating and updating clinically accurate English language information for a reputable scientific publisher.
  • Applicants must be based in the UK and have the appropriate right to work in the UK. Visa sponsorship is not available for this role.
