BMJ Group is seeking a Research Integrity Editor to join our Content Integrity team, which works across our journals portfolio to safeguard and improve the quality of work published, and to advance BMJ's strategic interest in research and publication integrity, open research, patient and public partnership, and the communication and reporting of research. The role holder will report to, and deputise for, the Content Integrity and Publication Ethics Editor, who leads the integrity team. They will work with journal editors to advise on integrity and publishing ethics cases with support from the wider team. The role holder will drive project work to advance BMJ's strategic interests in research and publication integrity, including improving integrity workflows, testing new integrity tools, developing essential guidance resources for BMJ staff and editors, and reporting on BMJ’s integrity work and impact internally and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Managing cases: Handle integrity cases which have been triaged by the Publication Ethics and Content Integrity Editor, in particular those requiring editorial input. Maintain accurate case records and ensure ongoing cases remain on track, with administrative support from other team members.
  • Policies, tools and best practice: Assist in researching, proposing and drafting policy and procedures related to integrity. Contributing to cross-departmental projects to ensure integrity is embedded into processes and workflows. Assist in testing and implementation of integrity tools and/or AI approaches to screening for integrity issues. Contribute to communications and training for journal editors, including assisting in the programming and/or delivery of monthly webinars, delivering sessions at the editors’ seminar and retreat, and creating new material to help editors improve decision-making and ensure publication of high quality content.
  • Workflow and impact: Assisting with implementing the strategy for the integrity team and developing its annual operational plan. Contributing to integrity reports describing the team’s work and other team outputs. Prepare summaries of complex cases for discussion with other editorial staff and with the BMJ Ethics Committee.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • Experience (essential): Substantial editorial experience on a biomedical or general medicine journal, including commissioning, peer review, editing and writing. Relevant experience in a public-facing role / interacting with and managing a variety of stakeholders. Experience in critical appraisal (including biomedical research papers). Either clinical or post-graduate research experience to inform editorial decision-making. Demonstrated experience in research integrity issues and current emerging challenges (e.g. AI use). Experience or knowledge of audit or clinical research.
  • Qualifications: A medical degree. Relevant post-graduate qualification would be an advantage. Qualified candidates with postgraduate clinical research experience will be considered.
