Job Purpose

You will manage the Publishing and Events (P&E) Insights team (2 x data analysts), providing analysis and insights to guide effective decision making across the business. You are responsible for, and will deliver, actionable reporting, in-depth analyses, and strategic recommendations for the product portfolio to a wide variety of stakeholders, including senior management. You cut through the noise to communicate clear information, bridging the gap between data and the business. You will lead and develop the insights team, fostering professional growth through active mentoring and workload management.

You will create and operationalise the P&E Insights strategy, improving processes, standards and the utility of reporting. By collaborating closely with stakeholders to understand their goals, you will ensure the strategy directly addresses and delivers on business needs. Working in close collaboration with the data department you will drive improvements to existing data sources, and manage the migration and quality assurance of new sources. You will ensure the business gets the benefit of the data it has access to, balancing short term delivery with long term developments.

Responsibilities

  • Data & Process Ownership: Act as Product Owner for Journals Data; design and iterate on the publishing insights strategy to ensure reporting is accurate and useful.
  • Stakeholder Management: Navigate ambiguous requirements and conflicting requests to deliver viable solutions. Balance team capacity and system constraints to meet business needs effectively.
  • Team Leadership: Manage daily operations, staff development and workload planning for the insights team.
  • Strategic Support: Validate business objectives and propel initiatives through evidence-based analysis and documented processes.
  • Analysis and Translation: Transform complex data into actionable insights for senior leadership and operational problem-solving.
  • Reporting and Efficiency: Oversee the development of actionable, repeatable dashboards that highlight business trends and improve team workflows.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • In depth understanding of the academic journal publishing market and current industry trends, including open access and funder mandates, read and publish deals, revenue and cost allocation mechanisms, pricing strategies and business models.
  • Expertise in analyzing complex data to deliver actionable insights and strategic recommendations.
  • Excellent communication with a proven track record of presenting persuasively to senior management. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively with technical and non-technical colleagues alike.
  • Strong understanding of publishing systems, metadata and data flow between systems, for example, ScholarOne, production systems, Crossref, and external indexers.
  • Experience of business intelligence systems, for example Tableau.
  • Experience of working across systems and stakeholders to deliver data quality improvements for end users.
  • Experience of line management.
  • Proven ability to manage conflicting priorities, navigate ambiguity, and lead projects to completion.
  • Experience of finding creative solutions to roadblocks to deliver on business objectives.
  • Experience directing the creation of actionable, automated dashboards that improve business efficiency.
  • Experience of utilising AI to improve processes, reporting or driving efficiencies.
