This role sits within our AFG division (Angus F Gunn Ltd), which specialises in the supply and processing of mild and stainless steel for the engineering and fabrication sectors across the UK and Ireland. We’re looking for a Trainee CAD Operator to join our Production team. This position is ideal for someone at an early stage of their CAD or production career, or for an individual looking to develop their skills within a technical office environment in the steel industry.

Key duties will include:

  • Maintaining and supporting administrative and technical systems within the Production department, working closely with the Production Manager.
  • Importing customer-supplied NC, DXF and DWG files into CAD software and preparing them for production.
  • Checking, cleaning and amending drawings where required, clearly recording any changes and communicating these to the Sales team.
  • Creating accurate nests for drilling and cutting jobs to minimise waste and make best use of materials and offcuts.
  • Developing cutting patterns and drilling packs to support quotations and production planning.
  • Producing drawings for customer approval, including any cutting or drilling details.
  • Understanding machine capabilities and recommending suitable cutting methods such as plasma, gas or laser.
  • Supporting the Sales team with technical queries, large cutting lists and feasibility checks, including processing jobs in Stockmaster.
  • Assisting with stock control, returned materials and related documentation.
  • Working closely with Production and Transport teams to support smooth material flow.
  • Providing monthly optimisation and efficiency figures to management.

Skills and Qualities

We’re looking for someone who is keen to learn, detail-focused and enjoys working in a technical environment. You’ll ideally have:

  • A strong willingness to learn and develop new technical skills.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Some knowledge of CAD software or similar technical packages (training will be provided).
  • Clear communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • The ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
