We are recruiting exclusively on behalf of a growing, entrepreneurial SME in Nottingham who are seeking their first Financial Controller. This is a newly created position driven by sustained business growth, and offers the opportunity to take full ownership of the finance function across multiple entities.

Reporting directly to the owner-managers, the successful candidate will lead on all aspects of management accounting, reporting and compliance, while also being happy to support with day-to-day transactional finance when needed. You will have one direct report, with responsibility for mentoring and developing their skillset. This is a hands-on role in a business that values initiative, reliability and a proactive approach.

The Role:

  • Preparation of monthly management accounts, financial reporting and commentary for the Directors
  • Managing and developing one direct report
  • Overseeing transactional finance, including purchase and sales ledger, payment runs and bank reconciliations
  • Responsibility for VAT, CIS and payroll compliance across the group
  • Cash flow forecasting and financial planning
  • Supporting commercial decision-making with clear financial insights
  • Liaising with external accountants and managing year-end processes
  • Ensuring consolidated reporting across multiple legal entities
  • Developing and improving financial processes and controls

About You:

We’re looking for a confident and capable individual, ideally with experience in the construction, property or related sectors. You may be qualified (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) or qualified by experience (QBE), what matters most is your ability to run a finance function end-to-end and communicate effectively with business leaders.

You will bring:

  • Strong experience in management accounting, reporting and compliance
  • Hands-on experience managing CIS, VAT and payroll
  • A background in running finance within a multi-entity SME environment
  • Previous line management or team leadership experience (even if limited)
  • The ability to balance strategic input with day-to-day operational finance
  • A positive, sleeves-rolled-up attitude and desire to add value
